Over a year ago, on August 24, 2018, I volunteered to be a moderator, not knowing what to expect.  Much like recently, it was in response to a Blue Yeti request.  Moderators were a mysterious group, and I figured at the least I would have interesting stories after I got kicked out.  Blue Yeti (View Comment): […]

What Cannot Be Unseen

A few days ago, fellow member @unsk wrote about California’s threat to the sanctity of the confessional in the Catholic Church. As an observation, I replied:

I don’t think many people appreciate the burdens the church puts on its priesthood. The confessional is an awful weight. The secrets some people carry are enough to push one to a breaking point and I cannot fathom knowing the secrets of an entire congregation.

Re: Code of Conduct and its implementation: What first interested me in Ricochet was Peter and Rob. I knew of them both and liked them both very much. Also, I trusted their judgment and professionalism. I knew Peter from reading about him and Rob from National Review (“The Long View”). I disliked the comment sections […]

The Best Part of Ricochet

I’m blown away — as well as humbled, delighted and honored. I put up a post this past weekend that had the potential for being controversial. But I decided to risk it, because I felt the subject was important to discuss.

The word “controversial,” as it turns out, was an understatement. The comments came pouring in, the passion was high, and the disagreement with me, in particular, was profound.

The inclusion of “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace as one of the moderators for this fall’s presidential debates sparked a firestorm when he told colleague and media reporter Howard Kurtz that it wasn’t his job as a moderator to fact-check the candidates during the actual debate. I do not believe that it is my […]

During times when passions run high, many flags may be thrown throughout the course of a day. At the moment, this seems to be complicated by “Flag” and “Like” appearing close enough together on iOS devices that members report accidentally flagging comments when they mean to like them instead. (Thanks, @mattyvan and @brentb67 for pointing […]

With the addition of moderators, there has been a running joke about sending up the Giraffe signal on a thread that needs moderation.  Fine and good.  But I think we need a different signal, or more of a flag that we can throw down when we don’t really need a moderator, just call to reality. […]
