The Left’s Shabby Vision

I think we conservatives sometimes feel inadequate, as if we lack the joy and enthusiasm that the left seems to bring to its various causes. It’s hard, after all, to wax rhapsodically about fiscal responsibility, deregulation, federalism, and other principles that distinguish conservative philosophy from the ever-expanding universe of leftist passions and causes. We don’t do sit-ins. We don’t chant. Conservatism is, well, conservative, and just not very exciting.

But if you scratch the surface, if you look beyond superficial enthusiasm and consider the worldviews that truly motivate left and right, you discover something interesting and, I think, counter-intuitive. You discover that it is conservatism that is optimistic, positive, enthusiastic, innovative, and forward-looking — in short, hopeful — and the left that is, overwhelmingly, motivated by a grim, desperate, fearful, and impoverished view of both humanity and our prospects.

But How Will You Pay For It?

This post stems out of a conversation at the work lunch table. Someone brought up that Brooklyn Bug-Eye’s economic illiteracy. “We’ve chased Amazon away! That’s three billion in tax incentives that we can spend elsewhere!” Not quite how that works. The discussion moved on to banning cow farts and air travel and so forth. I’ll spare you the details, you’ve heard ’em all before. The problem is that by the time you get to how you’re going to pay for such a thing you’ve already lost the argument.

Here, let’s have Rachael Carson tell it.

Big Lies for the Straight Guys

Welcome to the Harvard Lunch Political Podcast for August 21, 2018, (number 188!!!) it’s the Big Lies for the Straight Guys edition of the show with your (trust me) straight hosts radio guy Todd Feinburg and AI guy Mike Stopa. This week we talk about a horrific tweet (why wasn’t he banned for this?!?!) by Jonathan van Ness of Queer Eye fame where he said (can I even repeat this on Ricochet? what about the CoC?) that “not all Republicans are racist.” And as if that wasn’t enough, he said “we gotta remember we are all in this together.” My God! What was he thinking? What kind of DINO is he trying to be?

Naturally, the true brethren of the left gave him several earsful on twitter.

Honorable Pundits on the Left?

My morning routine, for years, consists of going through posts on Ricochet, Instapundit, Powerline Blog, etc. I’ve felt that I need to read intelligent commentary from the Left, but haven’t found it yet. I know it’s out there, so I appeal to the Ricochet Hive Mind to enlighten me — who is worthwhile reading on the Left?

A Problem on the Right

Let’s make one thing clear. According to the left, you don’t deserve to have an opinion. They don’t care about your input. They are not interested in finding a way to live together in peace and harmony. They see you as a Nazi, a threat, deplorable, a virus on the earth. They want you and your worldview gone. To them, you are a racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic bigot and therefore your opinion doesn’t matter. Why, then, do we on the right continue to engage in political debate as if we are too above the fray to take the gloves off? Why do our representatives talk about “taking the high ground” and maintaining a civilized political discourse? The left isn’t looking to debate the opposition; they are looking to destroy it.

The left has made their intentions clear. A recent opinion piece by Tim Kreider published in the New York Times titled, “Go Ahead Millennials, Destroy Us” sets forth in no uncertain terms a long-standing leftist theme: Destruction of Western Values and Institutions. In Kreider’s article, published March 2, 2018, he implores America’s youth, “Go get us.” He states:

The left wants to take guns of the streets, but not illegal aliens, even when they commit murder. They want to do extensive background checks on anyone who wants to legally purchase a gun, but not anyone who wants to legally enter this country. They demand all gun owners take safety courses and prove competence, […]

“I’m with Her,” One Year Later

With the recent news about rampant sexual abuse in Hollywood, I was reminded of my unposted article on Hillary’s ironic campaign slogan. One year later, this piece is now more pertinent than ever.

After a viral video showed looped footage of potential POTUS and Bosnian sniper dodger Hillary Clinton collapsing at the 9/11 Memorial in New York, her campaign proved her unequivocal ability to lead the free world by demonstrating she can open an unsealed jar of kosher dills on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night enablerthon. Take that, conservatives and sexists! Hillary is woman, hear her Vlasic crunch!

Between ubiquitous Subaru and Pious Prius bumper stickers along with her sycophants screaming at those not as tolerant as them, we cannot escape three little words that The House of Sad came up with to grab her gender-centric voting block — “I’m With Her.” Congratulations Chappaqua, this may be the most accurate combination of nine letters ever to describe today’s Left.

Psycho Halloween Killers

Welcome to the Harvard Lunch Club for October 17, 2017, it’s the Psycho Halloween Killers edition of the show – number 144 – with your hosts, Todd Feinburg, Hartford radio guy, and Mike Stopa, nanophysicist, and today with special guest star, host of Michael in the Morningthe inimitable Michael Graham!

MG will join us, as will big cheese Rob Long, at the upcoming Ricochet meetup in Burlington, MA (just outside of Boston) on November 11, from 7-10 pm. Today he joins us to talk about the meetup and also to discuss why the left is choosing to lurch even farther left. And, in a related topic what gives when a poor Soda Pop and Pet Store owner (not kidding here) joins Donald Trump for a signing of an executive order that will help his 100+ employees get affordable health insurance only to find, when he returns to his home in central Massachusetts (yes, *that* Massachusetts) that his name is dog poo-poo? Michael will help us analyze.

From the “The Left Eats Its Own” file, comes this story: The students hurled a litany of insults at [director Kimberley] Peirce, putting up posters that read “f**k your transphobia” and “you don’t f**king get it” among other things. Worse, when Peirce ascended to her podium, students had placed a sign there. It read “f**k this […]

I went into November 8th a Reluctant Trumpeter. The subsequent behavior of those defeated at the polls and their supporters has changed that. I am now glad and proud that I voted for Trump. My only regret is that I did not overcome my squeamishness about his style sooner. He has all the right enemies, which tells […]

US Left Following Israeli Left to Long-Term Opposition

Leftist lunacies are luxuries for people in safe spaces. Israel is in the Middle East. Not surprisingly, Israelis have elected a Prime Minister from the Labour party just twice in the past twelve elections over 38 years. Voters evicted the Left’s last PM, Ehud Barak, fourteen years ago in an unprecedented landslide. The Left looks unlikely to regain the voters’ trust any time soon. I don’t know how much the Left cares. They continue to bask in their cultural, intellectual, and moral superiority. They pride themselves on how loudly they broadcast their own country’s shortcomings. They see their minority status as further proof of their countrymen’s backwardness and their own superiority. What they don’t realize is that the universities, the media, the judiciaries, the bureaucracies, and various other seats of unelected power are are largely legacies. If the Left remains despised they will lose those power centers too.

Is the same happening in the US? Michael Barone points out how 2016 resembles 1968 when Republicans began dominating presidential elections. He suggests we may repeat that. I suggest that he understates the case.

For years, the Democrats and the media protected the Clintons, no matter what they did. In the 90′s anyone who publicly criticized the Clintons or questioned their fitness for office was widely ridiculed. Anyone who was willing to testify against them had the whole world come down on them. That is the Democrats, the media, […]
