Jussie Delayed Is Jussie Denied

“This is MAGA Country!” inner-city white supremacists shouted at “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett as they put a noose around his neck and poured bleach on him. It happened in the wee hours of the morning, in the middle of a polar vortex, in the noted GOP stronghold of Chicago. The poor actor (I mean rich celebrity) could only defend himself with half-frozen Subway foot-long.

Everyone with more than three brain cells thought the story was nonsense, especially if they had spent any time in Chicago. Everyone but our betters in the national media and Hollywood, that is, who were duped from the jump. Local journalists doggedly revealed the truth and the story quickly collapsed. Today, Jussie faced the consequences:

A grand jury returned a six-count indictment accusing actor Jussie Smollett of lying to Chicago police when he reported a racist and homophobic attack last year, a special prosecutor announced Tuesday.

Soup for the Republican Soul

The last two months have been unkind to Democrats. Since being sworn in as the majority in the House of Representatives, the Party of Government seems hellbent on losing one news cycle after another. In the roughly eight-week period between Virginia governor Ralph Northam admitting to having performed in blackface to last Thursday when Jussie Smollett’s lawyer suggested that her client’s alleged Nigerian attackers may have been wearing whiteface, it’s tempting to think that God loves Republicans and wants them to be happy.

So overwhelmingly has the GOP dominated the news cycle that merely the last two weeks have provided ample Soup For The Republican Soul, from the self-immolation of Michael Avenatti to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s deeming itself a hate group. Let’s take a look at five more examples.

University Admissions Scandal

Rob Long of National Review Online and Greg Corombos of Radio America applaud Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel for sending Jussie Smollett a bill for more than $130,000 to cover the costs of the police to investigate his hate crime hoax.  They also shake their heads as the supposedly moderate “Economist” magazine labels Ben Shapiro a “sage of the alt-right” but then changes it to call him a “radical conservative.”  And they have a lot of fun with the news that Illinois State’s Attorney Kim Foxx didn’t really recuse herself from the Smollett case in the legal sense, just in the “colloquial” sense.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America laugh as Utah Sen. Mike Lee hilariously demonstrates the absurdity of the Green New Deal with a picture of Ronald Reagan riding a velociraptor and Star Wars references during a floor speech. They also dig into what happened in Chicago after state prosecutors abruptly dropped all charges against “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett. And they also rip Biden for attempting to win over progressives by condemning “white man’s culture” and saying he wish he could have done something more during the Anita Hill hearing.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America are grateful to see Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson rebuke Jussie Smollett for perpetrating a hate crime hoax and damaging the reputation of the city. Johnson also blasted the media for ignoring serious issues while providing wall to wall coverage of Smollett. They’re also horrified by reports of a active duty military officer who plotted to kill many people with bombings, shootings, and outbreaks of disease. And they correct MSNBC hosts Katy Tur and Ari Melber for claiming that George Washington was a “native son of New York”.

These days wearing a poncho to the wrong halloween party can get your life ruined on Twitter due to the claim of cultural appropriation.  I find the term itself to be a supercilious one used by the perpetually offended. That being said what Jussie did was attempt to capitalize on cultural elements in order to […]

Hello you fellow right wing, knuckle-dragging troglodytes and welcome to the Harvard Lunch Club Political Podcast number 213!!! it is the Ten in Twenty edition of the show with your 2 in 2 hosts radio guy Todd Feinburg and AI guy Mike Stopa. We come to you every week….but you *know* that already, don’t you? What, you ask, are the topics for this week? Where, you ask, is the beef?

Okay already!

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America appreciate the comments former CBS reporter Lara Logan made on media bias turning into media activism. They also discuss Bernie Sanders launching another presidential campaign and wonder if the 77-year-old democratic socialist will be able to make waves in 2020. And they also chuckle as California Sen. Kamala Harris stumbles badly over her response to the Jussie Smollett hoax.
