For this week’s Big Ideas with Ben Weingarten podcast, my guest was Rich Higgins. Higgins, an expert in unconventional warfare and combatting terrorism with over 20 years experience at senior levels of the Defense Department, and early supporter of President Trump, served as director for strategic planning in President Trump’s National Security Council (NSC). Today I’m launching a new podcast, Big Ideas with Ben Weingarten, and I’d like to ask for some help from the Ricochet community in making it as successful as possible. Big Ideas with Ben Weingarten features compelling long-form conversations with exceptional thinkers and doers — primarily though not exclusively of a conservative/libertarian bent — on the most critical ideas […]

Here are the bare facts of what the press in India is calling the “Kerala Love Jihad Case”: …Akhila Ashokan, a 24-year-old [Hindu] woman…converted to Islam in 2012 while pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery in Salem, Kerala…. More

The secular world loves Pope Francis and has a tendency to gush over what he says and does (at least when it deals with “social and economic justice” issues such as climate change, immigration, wealth redistribution, etc., etc.). This happened as early as the release of the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (EG). The Wikipedia article proclaims that […]

This week on the podcast we discuss the poster child for amnesty, the golden nugget sympathy case for open borders, Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos. De Rayos, or as we think of her, mother Guady, has been deported. She is a mother of two American-born children (i.e. anchor babies). She has been in America for 22 years. She came here as a 14 year old looking for a better life. She is doing what she is doing “out of love.” (Where have we heard *that* before??). And she only committed one, almost insignificant felony (identity theft) and she’s reaaaalllly sorry about that. The elitist media Cannot Conceive of why anyone would want the law to be enforced and mother Guady forced to leave. The reaction of the average deplorable is, however, “it’s about time.”

I find this (It Is How We Become to Jihad) to be a powerful piece — yep, in very broken English, but the editor’s note explains — that recounts how wannaba and not-wannaba terrorists are trained (dragooned, brutalized, many murdered) by those who think the Religion of Peace is a means to collecting 35 booties in Paradise for every Jew you kill. Camp Jihad is a real hoot. I am on the board (proud to be) of Gatestone Institute, which published this yesterday. The author is Hakim Haider.

It is time for an update on the worldwide jihad of Muslim attacks on Christians. If you have been relying on mass media to keep you informed, then there is a lot that you just don’t know. This is an ongoing story that our Leftist mass media have shown no interest in conveying to Americans, […]

We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Fr. James Schall lays to rest any doubts about whether or not Orlando was an Islamic jihadi terror attack. To look back “retrospectively” on Orlando is to see it as one more successful example of what one person can do if he has a mission and a worldview to justify it. The Orlando killer was […]

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Don’t Blame “Self Loathing.” Blame Jihadism.

pulse-orlando-shootingDon’t rush to infer motivations, some warned after Omar Mateen’s attack on Orlando’s Pulse nightclub in Sunday’s early hours. We simply don’t know, certainly in the first 24 hours, why a disturbed individual would choose to go on a terrible killing spree. Who knows what abnormalities are at work in such a person’s mind? Even if they say Napoleon or Space Commander Alpha sent them, we can hardly take their word for it.

To be sure, certain clues might have seemed vital. For example, not only had Mateen vowed allegiance to Islamic State in a 911 call during his attack (and also on Facebook, it later turned out), but IS itself within hours accepted his vow and welcomed his actions via a news agency, quite a bit faster than it acknowledged the allegiance of and praised the husband-and-wife attackers in San Bernardino last year. In fact, as New York Times reporter Rukmini Callimachi pointed out, Mateen, like the San Bernardino attackers and the attackers at a Garland, TX, cartoon exhibition (and like a number of attackers in Europe) had followed closely a protocol laid out by IS itself for announcing loyalty contemporaneously with an independently carried out act of violence.

Scholars, journalists, and even politicians uphold Muslim-ruled medieval Spain—“al-Andalus”—as a multicultural paradise, a place where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived in harmony. There is only one problem with this widely accepted account: it is a myth. More

Theological warrant aside, Brague asks how Islam’s greatest philosophers view jihad. He puts the question to three Aristotelians – al Farabi, Avicenna, and Averroes. All three permit the waging of holy war against those who refuse Islam – al Farabi and Averroes against Christians, Avicenna against the pagans of his native Persia. Al Farabi, who […]

Over nine years, I witnessed the neighborhood become increasingly intolerant. Alcohol became unavailable in most shops and supermarkets; I heard stories of fanatics at the Comte des Flandres metro station who pressured women to wear the veil; Islamic bookshops proliferated, and it became impossible to buy a decent newspaper. With an unemployment rate of 30 […]

When it is suggested that perhaps there’s something peculiar about Islam in comparison with other religions/worldviews/philosophies that leads to so much violence and oppression around the world, we are often advised to consider Indonesia. That nation hosts the largest Muslim population… and its Muslims are so much more relaxed! Okay, let’s consider Indonesia. Y’all know […]
