Contributor Post Created with Sketch. The Firing of James Comey: An Insider’s View

These days, my mind is in classical antiquity — focused on the last days of the Archidamian War. And when I am not thinking about Athens’ success at Pylos and Sparta’s at Amphipolis, I am teaching Greek History or a seminar on Plato’s Laws or (horribile dictu!) I am grading papers and exams.

So I did not hear about the firing of James Comey until I read an email this morning — sent by a former student who, having worked for years at the Department of Justice, is now retired. Here is what he told me:

Based on a career spent working with the FBI as a Justice Dep’t lawyer, and on the reasons that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein gave in this memo, I believe firing James Comey as FBI Director was the right thing to do. A lot of folks would’ve cheered if DAG Sally Yates and President Barack Obama had done this last July or October – as perhaps they should’ve.

Richard Epstein reacts to the news that Jim Comey has been fired as FBI director, grapples with the ensuing criticisms of the Trump Administration, and looks back at Comey’s legacy as head of the Bureau.

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. The Hillary Interview: Cold Porridge

Watching Hillary Clinton answer questions from Christiane Amanpour for 44 minutes is not exactly torture — it’s more like being forced to swallow a gallon of cold porridge.

Let’s leave personalities aside. Hillary’s is not very appealing to me (nor is Trump’s). But let’s pull back the lens and consider what, if anything, is to be learned about the current state of progressivism from this chat between two left-leaning women.

The setting was a conference sponsored by Women for Women International, a charity founded to help women survivors of war. It gets three out of four stars on Charity Navigator, and doubtless does some good (though people truly interested in doing the most good for impoverished and war-ravaged people might want to study William Easterly’s cautionary books including The Tyranny of Experts). When Hillary Clinton made some stock comments about women’s rights around the world being “central to democracy” and all other good things, the audience vibrated its approval.

On the last of this week’s podcasts, Noah Rothman and John Podhoretz (Abe Greenwald is out) try to explain what on earth happened to make it possible for the House to pass a health-care bill and whether this is good news for Republicans or terrible news. (Answer: Both! Neither! Who knows!) Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton reemerges to take full responsibility for losing the election and then turns around and blames James Comey, misogyny, the media Russia, and blue cheese (John made up that last one). Give a listen.

Hillary Clinton just can’t move on. Sure she says she “takes responsibility” for her loss, but then lists all the reasons she’s not responsible. It’s just not fair! Nate Silver says she would have won on October 27! Yeah, about that. What did he say about her winning on November 8? Preview Open

This piece out of NYU is absolutely fascinating. They had a female actor play Trump and a male one play Clinton in a reenactment of excerpts from the debates.

I love the honesty that these very liberal academics display. They expected to see the female Trump come off as less acceptable and the male Clinton to be more impressive. The opposite happened.

I don’t want to add too much to the piece, which is very thorough and insightful, but one thing struck me: the myth of sexism in actual daily life. The idea that it is more acceptable in 21st Century America for a man to condescend to and dismiss a woman the way Hillary did Trump as a matter of course in the debates.

Victor Davis Hanson explores the factors that led to widespread defeats for Democrats in 2016 — and warns of trends within the party that may prevent it from commanding electoral majorities anytime soon.

Dreams can be strange; nightmares stranger. And sometimes discussion of their strangeness is hampered because the subject is suspect. Much like the study of the stars, one can find real, serious science. Unfortunately, one can also find pap mysticism fit only for the back page of a checkout counter tabloid. Therefore, I think I should make that […]

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Recommended by Ricochet Members Created with Sketch. Trump’s O’Reilly Super Bowl Interview

Fox News released an excerpt last night of an interview of President Donald Trump by Bill O’Reilly that will air before the Super Bowl tonight. In it, O’Reilly asks Trump about Putin, noting that “Putin’s a killer.” Trump then responds, “There are a lot of killers. We’ve got a lot of killers. What do you think–our country’s so innocent?”

This is not different from things that Trump said during the campaign. In a December, 2015, appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Trump made a similar statement. When host Joe Scarborough said that Putin “kills journalists that don’t agree with him,” Trump replied “Well, I think that our country does plenty of killing, too, Joe.” Later in the interview Scarborough asked Trump if he condemned the killing of journalists. Trump said, “Oh sure. Absolutely.” I wonder if O’Reilly will ask the president a similar follow-up question. I hope so.

Exhausted from breaking up fights all over the Trump Hotel Washington gym, I watched gratefully as lobbyists, cheerleaders, and fans finally filtered out.

There was only one serious injury. D’s Head Coach HRC had retrieved the ashtray she threw at William Rodham Clinton, and on her second try, beaned him good. The wound in his hairline bled profusely, causing the former president to schedule a cosmetic surgery haircut at Washington National.

“I demand equality,” Elizabeth “Dances With Wolf Blitzer” Warren screamed at the half-court line. “They have all the height. Our players need their fair share.” She pointed at Sheriff David Clarke Kent and his cowboy hat. “And, he’s a ….”

“Democrat,” I yelled to drown out whatever epithet she was attempting to hurl. “The R’s made him an honorary R, so under the rules of this game, he’s eligible to play on the RNC team.”

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. The Election Was Not Hacked

Between jeremiads decrying “fake news,” the mainstream media has created and advanced the biggest fake news story of 2016: That the presidential election was hacked.

  • “Obama Strikes Back at Russia for Election Hacking” New York Times
  • “Obama administration unveils retribution for Russia over election hacking allegations” CNBC
  • “U.S. Slaps Sanctions On Russia For Election Hacking, Expels 35 Diplomats” CBS
  • “Obama sanctions Russian officials over election hacking” USA Today
  • “U.S. Sanctions Russia Over Election Hacking; Russia Threatens to Retaliate” Wall Street Journal

Despite the histrionic claims of the press, the election was not hacked. The Democratic National Committee’s lousy IT security allowed someone to access their emails which were then leaked. Clinton’s campaign manager John Podesta fell for an age-old phishing scam that was as believable as getting millions of dollars from a Nigerian prince. Using the spotty media understanding of cybersecurity, they can claim that the DNC and Hillary’s campaign were “hacked,” but the election decisively was not. And the press knows it.

In order to “hack” an election, a nefarious group would have to infiltrate the voting systems of 50 states, plus DC and territories. All of these systems are unique, with completely different architecture, ballot formats, tabulation processes, etc., etc. This did not happen. In fact, some hackers tried breaking into a few different states’ systems weeks before the election, were quickly identified, and prevented from doing so. Likewise, someone attempted to gain illegal access to the Republican National Committee, but since they had a competent IT staff, this too was thwarted.

I hope you’re sitting down, because I have big news for you. Inspired by my look-a-like Brad Pitt, I single-handedly brought Operation Dribble to life.

In Troy, Brad’s Achilles kills Eric Bana’s Hector in a mano-a-mano confrontation rather than have the Greek and Ultra-Thin Trojan armies fight it out. The dispute started when that comely economic guru, Yellen of Troy, fell in love with Paris, in spite of the outrageous cost of a decent hotel room near the Ile de la Cite.

The Democrats latest foray into disruptive silliness played out Monday at the Electoral College. I use the term silliness, rather than some other tectonic term, because the Democratic party has ceased to be a party that can, or should be taken seriously in its present state. Leading up to November 8, the Democratic party and its legions of […]
