Gun Rights Are Civil Rights

Gun control tended to be used to disarm blacks when they were first introduced. Has the justification changed that much since then? Do the leaders of the democratic party actually have a much higher view of blacks than when Wilson was watching Birth of a Nation in the White House theater, or LBJ was cynically using the Civil Rights Act for votes?

Don’t Canada America, Redux

What started as a Chinese-style “social credit” financial system focused on protesting truckers four months ago has now expanded to guns, mainstream and social media, and religion.

Following the tragic massacre in Uvalde, Texas last week, Canada’s government, some 2,000 miles away, decided they needed to do something. There is no right to gun ownership in Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, backed by masked and clapping seals from his Liberal Party caucus, announced that legislation would be forthcoming to ban (sorry, a “national freeze”) the sale and transfer of all handguns.

If you’ve ever filled out a Form 4473, you’re familiar with the Question 11e: “Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or other controlled substance?” In case you thought there was any ambiguity with regard to medical marijuana, you were wrong. Indeed, there is a warning in bold […]

The Second Amendment guarantees American citizens the right to bear arms, but both federal and state governments determine how citizens may legally exercise that right. And while both federal and state gun control laws regularly change, laws at the state level change more frequently and often without the media coverage that surrounds changes at the federal level. […]

Deplatformed: How Big Tech Companies and Corporate America Subvert the 2nd Amendment

Anyone familiar with the Bible is familiar with the Mark of the Beast: Without this mark, no man may buy or sell.

Regardless of one’s religious faith or lack thereof, there is an illustrative case in this biblical story: When one cannot buy or sell, one is metaphorically up the creek. Short of producing everything one needs oneself, buying and selling are necessary parts of virtually every modern person’s life.

“The Constitution gives you the right, as a white man, to have a rifle in your home. The Constitution gives you the right to protect yourself. Why is it ‘ominous’ when black people even talk of having rifles? Why don’t we have the right to self-defense? Is it because maybe you know we’re going to […]

Mother’s Day Shooting

Early on Mother’s Day afternoon, a woman walked to her vehicle with her two sons. The elder son was in his mid-teens, but not yet licensed to drive. The younger, was a bit shorter and early teen by appearance. The mother and her sons were all carrying bags or containers, heading somewhere for the day.

The mother carried a cooler, of the right size for iced-down drinks and snacks on a pleasant Arizona spring day. The younger son had a school-size backpack and another small bag. The elder son had a small gym bag and a long fabric soft-side case.

That long case was an obvious signal. It is used for only one thing: a long gun, a rifle. Yes, gentle reader, Mom was going shooting for the afternoon with her two sons!

Gun Owners Are Being Othered, And We’re Letting It Happen

In the wake of the horrific shooting in Las Vegas, “bump stocks” became the cause célèbre of the gun control crowd. A bump stock, to be honest, is a rather silly device that attaches to the back of a rifle which allows you to rapidly increase the rate of fire of the gun, letting it mimic the effect of a fully-automatic rifle. Bump stocks specifically designed to get around the restrictions on civilian ownership of fully-automatic firearm that were imposed by the passage the National Firearms Act and the Hughes Amendment, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives decided (at President Trump’s urging) that they made a mistake back in 2010, and such things shouldn’t be in civilian hands.

The fact that you can replicate automatic fire with training and practice, (or even with something as prosaic as a belt loop) seems to be lost on the BATFE, but that’s a topic for another time.

Richard Epstein reacts to former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens’ suggestion that the Second Amendment be repealed — and explains why the constitutional arguments about guns may point in a different direction than the policy arguments.

(Note: This was originally meant to be a comment on @frontseatcat ‘s post http://ricochet.com/499018/try-everything-president-trump/ but it grew out of control. I’ve been thinking we needed the multilayered defense against the current push to ban/limit certain weapons laid out fully anyways, so here it is — or at least the first couple layers.) This first part […]

In the aftermath of the Parkland shooting, Richard Epstein provides his legal analysis of where Second Amendment jurisprudence went wrong and explains what policy options might actually help to ease gun violence — and why real solutions are devilishly hard to come by.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America welcome the news that Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer will run for the U.S. Senate in North Dakota, and even though he’s not as conservative as we might want him to be, by all accounts Cramer gives the GOP its best chance to defeat Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp.  Jim also details his frustration with the constant demand for a national conversation on gun laws when so many gun control activists have little grasp of the facts and little idea what the existing laws are.  And they react to Ronan Farrow’s column detailing Donald Trump’s efforts to carry on a months-long affair and keep it a secret, all while he was married to Melania and just months after their son was born.

“11 School Shootings This Year!”

What do the New York Times, Think Progress, CNN, Global News, The Week, Business Insider, NY Daily News, Seattle Times, Yahoo, Reuters, MSNBC, AOL, etc., all have in common? They dutifully repeat deceptive statistics from gun control groups in order to frighten the public. This is apparently done to advance their agenda of turning “citizens” into “subjects” by taking away their clear constitutional right to keep and bear arms. The latest example is this beauty from the New York Times: “School Shooting in Kentucky Was Nation’s 11th of Year. It Was Jan. 23.”

This headline is followed by incredulity that, because of their frequency, we have become so numb to these tragedies that we barely notice them and of course the rational strategy that something must be done!
