Preston Beckman was a network programmer at NBC and Fox for over 30 years. He brought the country “Must See TV” at NBC and was witness to the the start of the reality revolution when he was at Fox. Now, he’s retired and spends his days opining on Twitter about television, politics, and everything in between as his nom de plume, “The Masked Scheduler.”

In this Martini Shot Conversation, Beckman discusses the sweeping changes occurring to the business as it converts from broadcast to streaming and what it means to be a programmer in the 21st century. He also tells some hilarious stories from the olden days when broadcast networks ruled the airwaves, the culture, and the water cooler, and a 20 share could get you canceled.

Is Fox News Censoring Trump?

So I heard about, then saw, this clip of Trump’s Press Secretary showing video from the madness in Portland only for Fox News to cut from the press briefing. I don’t quite understand why — I’ve not heard people more in the know than me talk about it. But it looks really bad for Fox. Can anyone explain these things to me?

ACF PoMoCon #12: Plague Politics

Pete Spiliakos and I talk about politics in the age of the plague–what’s so insane about supply-side economics, what it means to think politically and prudentially, what the common good requires, and how to understand our weaknesses that we may deal with them. Fear is good, seriousness is required, preparing for the crisis unfolding, and planning for overcoming it is the sequence we need to go through. Pete and I have praise for Tucker Carlson and Sen. Tom Cotton, and a lot of criticism for everyone else.

Fox Doesn’t Pay Rent; NBC Pulls Hair

It’s Maria Von Trapp, Y’all. Carrie Underwood in The Sound of Music (NBC)

Back in 2013, the executives at NBC decided to hark back to an earlier time in the network’s history and stage a live musical. While the post-show reviews were mixed, The Sound of Music did well, pulling in 18.6M viewers.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America are cautiously optimistic that Republicans may soon pass a tax cut and while the proposal is not perfect, it moves in the right direction on a number of fronts.  They also react to Disney becoming an even more mammoth presence in entertainment with the news it is paying over $52 billion to buy most assets of Fox.  And they discuss the latest hit to the credibility of the Russia investigation, as a recently fired Mueller deputy referred to pursuing an “insurance policy” just in case Trump won the election.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America have all crazy news today.  They slam Pres. Obama for suggesting that Fox News being on in restaurants and bars is the reason Democrats fell short in 2016.  They also unload on BuzzFeed for demanding to know whether popular HGTV hosts agree with their pastor about homosexuality being a sin –  which leads to a bunch of fun tangents about HGTV in general.  And they rip Democrats and the media for throwing a hissy fit about the Electoral College and even intimidating electors just weeks after clutching their pearls about Trump possibly not accepting the election results.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America applaud Congress for overturning an Obama veto by huge margins and allowing 9/11 families to sue Saudi Arabia.  They also sigh as Fox News is forced to tell their hosts that online polls about who won Monday’s debate are not the same as a scientific poll.  And they wonder what Gary Johnson is smoking as he fails to name a single leader he respects.  Actually, we’re pretty sure we know what he’s smoking.

Live! It’s Television!

A glimpse inside the production truck during Fox’s presentation of Grease.

America seems to have a new fascination with live television. NBC has found ratings success by presenting Broadway musicals such as The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, and The Wiz.

If you were wondering why Brett Baier and Megan Kelly did all they could to kneecap Trump last night, maybe this news will help to explain it. “According to Federal Election Commission and Center for Responsive Politics data, 21st Century Fox News Corp. has donated more than $3 million to Clinton family accounts. Overall, this […]
