Boys and Girls

I raised five sons, and two things I tried to convey to them as they grew up were that it’s easier to destroy than to create, and that it’s easier to be great than to be good.

The first point is pretty obvious. Boys want to have an impact on the world. More than girls, boys feel a need to impose their will on nature, on the environment, and on the people around them. In young men, that’s expressed as a desire to build things, break things, dam up streams, and cut down trees. As they grow older, that desire to affect the world becomes a wish to scrawl graffiti over it, knock it down, shoot it, or otherwise bend it to their will.

Is this controversial? Female consciousness tends to be internally oriented, circular and diffuse, indirect and implicit in expression, with an emphasis on subtext. Life is full of variety, more than we know or recognize. Female consciousness tends to manifest in female bodies, and male consciousness tends to manifest in male bodies. But both can exist […]

On Male Consciousness

Is this controversial? Male consciousness tends to be externally oriented, linear, and focused on a goal, direct and explicit in expression.

Life is full of variety, more than we know or recognize. Male consciousness tends to manifest in male bodies, and female consciousness tends to manifest in female bodies. But both can exist in each. Often, one predominates. But the potential is there.

If you think about it, you have seen female consciousness expressed in a male body, and male consciousness expressed in a female body. Furthermore, sometimes even strong males display a female side to their consciousness, just as occasionally females display a strong male side to their consciousness.

Join Jim and Greg as they sip three good martinis today. First, they’re thrilled to hear that Israel and the United Arab Emirates are normalizing relations. They also shudder to learn the Maine Democratic Senate hopeful Sara Gideon repeatedly blocked legislation to ban female genital mutilation, but are thankful the story is coming to light for voters to consider. And they cheer weekly first-time jobless claims dropping below one million for the first time since the pandemic began.

https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-us-canada-48071933/the-burlesque-group-reclaiming-indigenous-sexuality Ok…so let me understand clearly. You exploit yourselves so that nobody else can get in there first. You completely copy the “colonizers” formats to express your indigenousness. You didn’t learn this style on the reservation or from elders nor testify whether they approve. The majority culture failed to objectify and lust after you enough […]

All Things Being Equal: Amy Coney Barrett for SCOTUS

“This year will be remembered as an especially auspicious time for the Supreme Court. President Trump is in a position to pick the next Justice from a list of extremely qualified jurists.” So says Leonard Leo, who was a key person putting together the list for President Trump. In an interview, he made clear his requirements and expectations:

What is important is that we have a judiciary occupied by individuals who understand … they have a duty and a moral obligation to enforce the structural Constitution. They have a duty to make sure that limits on government power are respected and enforced, and when they carry out that duty or obligation, they are in a myriad of ways preserving the worth and dignity of every human person. Because if you have a system where government can do anything, if you have a system where rights that aren’t in the Constitution can be created and things that are in it can be ignored, no one is safe.

The people on the qualifications list meet those requirements at a minimum. In fact, they are so well-qualified that many people are making their recommendations for Trump’s pick to separate the golden wheat from the less golden chaff. There is one person who has a unique combination of qualifications that no one else has, and that is Amy Coney Barrett.

Ok so this doesn’t have links but I came away from a magazine-flipping session or two recently when trapped in waiting lobbies with nothing of my own to read, and came away with this weird impression. If I had known it would congeal later than the glancing sessions I might have taken a few notes. […]
