Mrs. O’Shea teaches middle school in a suburban/rural area here in Maryland.  March first was the day that masking became voluntary.  So far, she counts just three teachers (including herself) unmasked and about half of the students.  Of the half of the students wearing masks, half of those wear them under their chins.  Reportedly, parents […]

Real Public Health Risks

covid versus public healthTwo people-watching episodes this past week brought into focus the real crisis in public health. WuFlu is not a public health crisis, in itself. Rather the grossly politicized exploitation of this novel respiratory disease virus, in service of the lab coat left system, advocated by Woodrow Wilson in the late 1890s and starkly warned of in President Eisenhower’s farewell address, has corrupted and effectively silenced real public health advocacy. Consider two real public health perennial campaigns, largely lost in the noise of COVID exploitation.

I was in my local veteran’s organization canteen (bar) last weekend, having counted the money and updated the bookkeeping. A woman in her 40s had a cough. Her comment: “it is just a smoker’s cough.” That statement called to mind a much younger veteran, a man in his late 20s, coming in after the previous night’s partying with a heavy cough as he went to the cigarette machine for another pack. We have known, since at least the late 1950s, that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer and a host of other very unpleasant long-term ailments. COPD, anyone? Listen to old-time radio and you will hear the cigarette companies in the late 1940s, early 1950s, assuring you that doctors attested that their customers experienced no throat irritation from smoking their product.

This brings to mind the much larger scope of 75 years or more of public health real science about heart disease, lung disease, and cancer prevention and treatment. Screening and early treatment have long been the message, grounded in real medical statistics. Yet, we saw a vile lab coat leftist bureaucrat, Anthony Fraudci, stand real public health on its head, stopping preventive care for critical months and hyping fear to his tiny bailiwick’s benefit.

Hubwonk host Joe Selvaggi talks with Harvard Medical School professor, Dr. Jonathan Darrow, about the observations of his recent paper, Evidence for Community Cloth Face Masking to Limit the Spread of SARS-CoV-2: A Critical Review, in which he examines the range, quality, and scientific observations of mask wearing efficacy studies.

More Dangerous Americans

Four people were arrested in NYC for burning and looting an Applebee’s restaurant.

Just kidding. We know that sort of thing is tolerated under the New Justice System. Heck, the Vice President of the United States contributed to a bail fund for violent rioters and that wasn’t a deal-breaker, even for people who work within the Justice System. No, the actual crime they were arrested for was protesting the city’s Vaccine Passport requirement.

The COVID Priests

Aaron said, “Sir, don’t be angry. You know the people — that they’re intent on evil. They told me, ‘Make a god for us who will go before us because, as for this fellow Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’” (Exodus 32:22-23)

The Israelites were worried and scared. Their leader Moses was AWOL, or so they thought. They needed someone to take care of them, someone to tell them what to do. They needed a god, and apparently any god would do, even one of their own making. They were ready to create a god and a religion based on their hundreds of years of experiences in bondage. How very human of them.

A Physician Ramble on Covid

I have a visceral distrust of government mandates, probably like most people on Ricochet. In addition, I think Fauci’s early lying to a free people that masks don’t work in order to preserve them for healthcare workers was abominable and sowed seeds of distrust in public health that are bearing fruit today. That being said, derided, discouraged, hated, or mandated, masks work to decrease the spread of COVID.

I am a doctor. My wife is a doctor. We have seen countless COVID-positive patients. Before the vaccines were available, we were protected by nothing but masks and we did not get COVID. Masks work at decreasing the spread of COVID and other respiratory illnesses. Masks — regular old surgical masks — are all that most people providing care to COVID patients in the hospital wear. N95 masks are typically reserved for times when an invasive airway procedure is planned.

Masks?

In the midst of renewed calls for universal masking in the name of Covid-19, can we have a reasoned, data-oriented discussion of how well universal masking prevents Covid deaths? Universal masking harms people and harms society. To justify such harms, I expect strong evidentiary support for the theory that universal masking prevents a significant number of Covid deaths.

Universal masking harms people. Many mask wearers experience anxiety, increased blood pressure, difficulties breathing. Universal masking cuts off much if not most interpersonal communication for many people, and interferes with the ability of children to learn and to develop social skills.

An Eyewitness COVID Report from Florida

Universal mask-wearing and social distancing.  And no lockdown in sight. Not being a elected public official from Texas, my spouse and enjoyed a nice trip to Florida sans doxxing and media, where we were grateful for warm weather; we’re blessed to have escaped to a decent (not spectacular) resort on short notice and traversed south via car just ahead of snow and ice storms that seem to have gripped most of the country and even parts of northern Mexico (not Cancun, apparently).

I had heard and read conflicting things about Gov. Ron DeSantis’ management of the COVID crisis – he never executed a lockdown of the state – or on citizens’ behaviors. A quick internet search is replete with endless excoriation of Florida’s handling of the virus and vaccine distribution, despite nearly 50 percent of the state’s seniors being vaccinated. I’d also heard that Floridians and especially workers were flaunting CDC safety standards, with crowded bars and limited masks. Some idiot dressed as the grim reaper has been spotted with media in tow along some of Florida’s beaches.

Were people actually wearing masks? Social distancing? Were retailers and other companies taking precautions? We know people and friends who‘ve been afflicted with COVID and lost loved ones. We grieve with them, along with 511,000 Americans who have also been lost to the China virus.

A great start  to my day. The headline over the editorial of the day in the Fresno Bee* read, “Finally, a president with a Covid 19 plan” Did they mean the president who said that the trajectory of the pandemic cannot be altered? Or was it the scientific observation that the solution is not the […]

The current lockdown orders by idiot politicians (but I repeat myself) focus on limiting exposure to people with Covid. The draconian lockdowns in Europe limit people’s time outside their residences. Some of the US lockdowns aren’t much better. We know obese people are more vulnerable to Covid as are people with low vitamin D levels. […]

The use of masks is politically fraught, a disheartening aspect of this pandemic for me since I think so many of my own tribe are on the wrong side of the issue.  I’m convinced that masks work to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but I don’t like the fascistic FLOTUS approach adopted, for example, for […]

I don’t have a strong opinion on the value of masks. It seems to me that since OR doctors and attendants have worn them for decades (and not just to hide their coffee breath at 6:30 am surgeries) they must have efficacy. So the argument being that they protect the other guy somewhat is reasonable. […]
