Recommended by Ricochet Members Created with Sketch. QotD: Judging Columbus

I should be judged as a captain who went from Spain to the Indies to conquer a people numerous and warlike, whose manners and religion are very different from ours, who live in sierras and mountains, without fixed settlements, and where by divine will I have placed under the sovereignty of the King and Queen our Lords, an Other World, whereby Spain, which was reckoned poor, is become the richest of countries.—Christopher Columbus

You may judge him more harshly than he judged himself. Or maybe more leniently. But however you do it, happy Columbus Day.

shutterstock_65361118My son entered high school last week. In his American History class, the teacher wasted no time with the indoctrination: The very first assignment was a selection from the work of Howard Zinn. Before you suggest I summarily withdraw him from the school, let me say that I think this is a good thing. I want him to be exposed to progressive thought, the more ridiculous the better.

Furthermore, the assignment required the students to assess Zinn’s biases, which my son did with gusto. He told me it was absurd for Zinn to judge Christopher Columbus by modern standards. I couldn’t have been more proud.

Addendum: See my Comment #27. Although the teacher is definitely a progressive, I may have been too quick to judge, as he appears to encourage critical thinking, notwithstanding his bias.

Editor’s Note: Every year on Columbus Day we see a surge in traffic to this post, originally authored by Tommy De Seno for the 2010 holiday. When we saw a similar bump this morning, we decided to feature it here on the Main Feed for all who haven’t read it before.

I’m sure it’s happened to you, as it did to me again last night: Some starry-eyed collegian told me Christopher Columbus shouldn’t be celebrated because of his treatment of Indians, armed with nothing more than her University professor’s insistence.

This began as a reply to Mustangman1967’s topic on Seattle, but rather than abuse the recent “5000-word limit” I decided a new topic a better option. So despite our disdain for Seattle’s new “Indigenous Peoples’ Day”, there are plenty on the Progressive side applauding this. In fact, that’s what the Council can count on: that […]

In Columbus, Ohio, the city council is trying to craft an ex post facto law to shut down Uber, the distributed ad hoc paid car service. Their reasoning is the usual: “Would you get on an airplane that wasn’t properly inspected?” said Morgan Kauffman, who owns Yellow Cab of Columbus. “There’s no chance in the […]
