The Eyes of Texas

 

The Baylor Lady Bears beat Notre Dame, the defending Women’s College Basketball champions, to win the NCAA championship Sunday night. The Lady Bears were solidly in control for much of the game, thanks to tremendous defense, led by their version of the Twin Towers (think classic Houston Rockets). Then their biggest star player, Lauren Cox, got tangled in her footwork with a Notre Dame player, and her knee went in an entirely unnatural direction.

Cox collapsed in agony and had to be taken off the court in a wheelchair. After an x-ray, she came back to the bench with a heavy brace and crutches. The comfortable double-digit lead evaporated, as Notre Dame not only got hot but took advantage of the weaker defense under the net. Finally, the defending champions took a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter.
