Lies? What Lies?

Nobody expects the US to keep its promises anymore. After all, the world has changed drastically, woke agendas must be pursued and commitments to others that don’t directly support that agenda are a waste of time. We’ve lost so much credibility on the world stage that few countries probably believe we can be trusted anymore. Trying to maintain truth, integrity, and honor are just foolish aspirations.

So when we left Afghanistan in August 2021, promises we had made to the Afghan translators simply became inconvenient. Joe Biden didn’t care about the promises we’d made to the translators to ensure that they would get passage to the United States; all he cared about was getting out, regardless of the lives lost and those at risk. Even losing 13 American Marines was barely acknowledged. As a result, a pathetic effort was made to get Afghans out with no effort to make sure that the Afghan translators were at the top of the list. Although a small number of Afghans and their families managed to escape on the designated military plane, or due to their own efforts and those of NGOs, such as No One Left Behind, many were killed by the Taliban; many still remain in hiding in fear for their lives.  James Miervaldis tells the story:

Just when I started to believe that the Republicans in Congress might actually be ready to act boldly, they have betrayed us again. It’s difficult for me to determine whether I am angrier with the Democrats for proposing this deceitful bill, the Respect for Marriage Act, or with the Republicans for lining up behind them. This Act further damages and weakens our religious liberties, in particular our support of traditional marriage, and it reminds us that the Progressive Left will never stop infringing on our rights and freedoms.

So what’s the big deal? A dozen Republicans have decided that they want to cozy up to the Democrats, or are too lazy or foolish to study the real intentions of the bill, or simply don’t care:

When we don’t get our way, especially when we think our goals are righteous and honorable, we can feel betrayed. In a sense, our being born on this earth entitles us to dreams transformed into reality, and ideals actualized in our day-to-day life.

Anyone can be victim to this mentality, and the assumptions and conclusions that ensue. But I believe that people who mature, who learn the difficult lessons of life, realize that we can experience both blessings and disappointments. We can learn from our disappointments to ascertain our limitations, errors, or roadblocks. And then we can decide on the other efforts we can pursue to make our own lives, or the lives of others, happier and richer.

They also discuss what this episode says about our justice system. They also have different reactions to South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn suggesting Joe Biden’s big wins on Tuesday suggest the Democratic National Committee should “shut this primary down” and “cancel the rest of these debates.” And they get a kick out of the writer for “The Atlantic” who feels betrayed because her husband voted for Bernie Sanders for strategic reasons in the California primary while she stuck with Elizabeth Warren.

President Trump Rocks Out with Real Heavy Metal Band

The afternoon of 20 March 2019, President Trump rocked out with a group that makes real heavy metal. The event was different from other presidential appearances, but featured many of the same themes. Two themes, American defense revival and energy dominance, stood in stark contrast to news from Germany. In the midst of the prepared remarks, with the usual riffs, President Trump elaborated on his criticism of the politician John McCain, who the appointed Senator from Arizona, Martha McSally, is unconditionally defending, raising questions about her viability or suitability in 2020. President Trump’s visit to the Lima Army Tank Plant was a great political messaging success on several levels.

The setting:

The Lima Army Tank Plant, in Lima, Ohio, is where the components of the M1 tank, in all its variations, are assembled into a heavy metal instrument that can rock your world. The plant has a uniformed Army oversight contingent, partnered with a skilled civilian workforce centered around proud UAW workers. President Trump spoke to the assembled plant crew, to repeated cheers from these skilled tradesmen, proud UAW members.

Forget Trump, Congress Is the Problem

We on Ricochet may be divided on Donald Trump, but there should be one thing that unites us — a white-hot hatred of our despicable and anti-conservative (or just utterly spineless) Congress.

Leaving aside the budget that gives the Democrats everything, and only gives us money to fund the military, despite controlling Congress, there have been repeated failures to enact conservative legislation. It’s not Trump standing in the way, it’s Congress breaking promises repeatedly. No repeal of Obamacare, despite running on that issue and having passed a repeal bill under Obama that died in the Senate. Numerous conservative nominees stalled in committee or waiting for approval.

@amyschley shared this piece of @kevinwilliamson’s with me, and I remarked that I especially appreciated the passage, “The opposite message — that life is hard and unfair, that what is not necessarily your fault may yet be your problem, that you must act and bear responsibility for your actions…”

This is because it doesn’t blame folks for having it tough, and isn’t assuming that those things which we cannot be faulted for are easy to bear. Nobody wants to be called to take responsibility for the crap which isn’t their fault, but often life calls for it, and we’ll fail, and still be obligated to make an effort anyhow.
