Save the Earth, Sign the Petition

There’s a chill wind blowing.

Air conditioning is worse than ISIS, says John Kerry. So, let’s all join together and sign the petition to remove air-conditioning from all state department buildings:

WHEREAS, Secretary of State John F. Kerry has suggested that air conditioners are as big a threat as ISIS, and … WHEREAS, it is the duty of our elected and appointed government officials to lead by example, … THEREFORE, we call upon the U.S. Department of State to remove air conditioning from all property that the Department owns, rents, or otherwise employs, including but not limited to embassies, consulates, office buildings, etc., all vehicles owned and/or operated by the Department, and any other property, real or movable, owned, rented, or otherwise employed by the Department.

I signed.

Somebody explain the science to me.

From what I understand, CFCs (Chloro-Fluoro-Carbons) had to be banned because at high altitudes they broke down and the chlorine part of the molecule killed ozone molecules.

So, if HFCs (Hydro-Fluoro-Carbons) replace the chlorine with hydrogen, then does that mean the chlorine was never really the culprit?

I think if we take to task every superlative claim made by politicians, perhaps we could tone down the alarmist rhetoric a pitch or two?

Let’s put inter-webs to some good use.

I don’t know why we are stopping at man-made local cooling. Heating large buildings in the winter also burns a lot of fossil fuels.

If only Ebenezer Scrooge ran the federal bureaucracy, the budget would be balanced and the earth might have a chance.

Yes, the heat must be turned off too.  The source for that heat probably comes from natural gas or oil, both of which the Democrats are trying to shut down.

Eventually cooler heads will prevail over the hot head Kerry. I had to concentrate to remember that Kerry was our secretary of state. He is so invisible.

If I remember correctly, back in the ’70s CFC were destroying the ozone layer with the result we were going to have an ice age or something like that.

So all refrigerant had to be reformulated, replacing R-12 with R-22 in cars and whatnot. Thus occasioning much expense and inconvenience in the First World. Also making refrigeration (for medicine) more expensive in the Third World causing much hardship and death.

Once again the Greens have blood on their hands which must be quite a nuisance when windsurfing and yachting off Nantucket, or skiing between sessions at Davos.

BTW, Kerry gives us a good preview of what we can expect from any Secretary of State that Clinton might appoint.

The thing I never understood was that they replaced the CFCs with HFAs in albuterol inhalers. Apparently CFCs were bad for the ozone but were safe enough to inhaled into an asthmatic lung.

I think the idea is that both chemicals will react with ozone (O3) which will cause the depletion of this molecule. If I recall O3 is important in blocking out certain wavelengths of UV radiation from the sun.

What, they weren’t fanning?  Falling down on the job, were they? Were they getting minimum wage?  Certainly His Excellency is deserving of highly skilled fanners, and not just those on the bottom rung.

Would this apply to refrigerators as well? While saving the planet is a great idea and all, putting up with wilted arugula might be too high a price for Kerry to pay.

I read somewhere years ago that the best way to rid us of the federal government would be to shut down the air conditioners in Washington. I think of that every summer.

    Count me in.
