RNC Day Four Wrap Up

Yesterday was the final night of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. The theme was “Make America One Again.” As usual, the start of the festivities was loaded with minor figures: Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Pastor Mark Burns, Fran Tarkenton, Brock Mealer, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, Gov. Mary Fallin, Lisa Shin. Things got going after 9 pm when Reince Priebus spoke, followed by Peter Thiel around 9:30 and Tom Barrack a little after that. But the headliner of the evening was, of course, Donald Trump, who was introduced by his daughter Ivanka.

So this was the biggest speech of his life. What did Trump say?

Well, the undercurrent running through the evening was Donald the Builder. But his speech was all about security. He said we cannot allow political correctness to stop us. He quoted crime statistics, police shooting stats, illegal immigration statistics. Then he went into economic statistics. Then budget statistics. (The fact checkers have their work cut out for them…)

Basically everything is terrible. “The situation is worse than it’s ever been before.”

And then … there was a lot of shouting. He covered a lot of familiar themes. Hillary Clinton is on the take. Unemployed factory workers. Things will change. It was long on one-liners and applause lines, short on policy details. “The time for action has come.”

He started off pretty well, stayed focused, stayed on prompter, and then he gradually slid off. If there was a structure, it disappeared. He was just all over the place and it stopped being a nomination acceptance speech and became an extemporaneous Trump speech. Just about every line he’s said in the last year, he shouted again last night. It wasn’t a greatest hits, so much as a complete works. He went on at 10:15 ET and just kept speaking, not wrapping up until after 11:30.

But if you want to know what he said, we suggest you find the video, don’t just go by the prepared remarks as written. Because after a certain point, the two will diverge, rather starkly.

Excellent speech by Trump; he hit all the right notes. I look forward to voting for him in November.

Long boring, standard Trump, no artfulness, but I guess we’ve had artfulness up to our eyeballs but I don’t know what much of it meant.  For instance, is he going to Federalize the police?   Ivanka,  unlike Donald Jr, is a progressive Democrat a feminist and an economic illiterate.  I hope she runs her businesses and  stays out of her fathers administration.   Of course this progressive, centralizing nanny state interventionism is why I preferred all of the other candidates to Trump.   My grief at his nomination has deepened.  Sigh, but he’s not Hillary.

I watched the entire speech, including Ivanka’s intro.  He emphasized all the right issues, spoke frankly and with a bit less bombast than usual.  It was an effective speech that introduced some powerful memes for the general campaign; for example, being the voice of our abused citizens, and his supporting Americans instead of them being asked to swear fealty to Hillary’s dreadnought style of governance.

As the difficult battle for America’s future unfolds up to the election, I am becoming more optimistic about Trump’s skills.  It’s hard to imagine now how I once thought Cruz was the answer.  But his ego turned out to be larger and more undisciplined than Trumps!

What I recall most is one phrase: “I will be your champion.”

That is the theme that ties together the video that preceded Trump’s address, his daughter’s introduction and Trump’s talk.

I lived in New York City from 1967 to 1991. I saw what progressives did that once great metropolis. I know what Trump did as a private citizen to help bring it back. He was New York City’s champion.

I listened to Ivanka. I saw a young woman raised in privilege who expresses the most democratic attitude of all – gratitude – for her father and mentor. He clearly was and is her champion and the results are damned impressive.

I heard Trump speak movingly about the parents who lost loved ones to illegal alien criminals. He went and stood with them, when principled conservatives and mainstream Republicans were nowhere to be found. He was their champion and he has made a difference in their lives.

For several election cycles conservatives, tired of the never-ending and futile defensive posture, longed for someone to take the battle to the progressives, in politics, culture and media. We cheered wildly for anybody who stood up to the cultural bullying we call political correctness. We wanted someone to tell us not whom we could resent out of a sense of grievance, but who’d fight for us – our values, our traditions, our history and our future.

We wanted a champion and last night by God we got one.

    Vote Trump!
