Ricochet Magna Meetup in Kansas City (Short Version)

kcA number of key anniversaries fall within a week of the weekend of June 12-14. As such, it seemed like a good time to get together with fellow Ricochetti and a few guest speakers to party as only people who will pay for a political podcast know how.

From experience with National Review Cruises and from other meetups, we came to the conclusion that you wanted to make sure that there was always something to do, but that you never stopped people from just hanging out and talking. We will have political, historical, and theological talks, great food, alcohol, tobacco, and firearms. From the World War I museum to Kansas City Blues dancing, there are any number of fun activities to ignore or pay attention to at your leisure. The full, if provisional, schedule is here (I expect most comments to go there), but if you want to ignore the activities your schedule is Friday: meeting space in the hotel, Saturday: Liberty Memorial Park, Sunday: Leavenworth.

The 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, and 6400 year anniversaries being celebrated are the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the first battle American troops went into in Vietnam, the resignation of William Jennings Bryan from Wilson’s cabinet (leading to entry into the War), the Battle of Waterloo, the birth of Pocahontas’ kid (almost), the Signing of the Magna Carta, St. Cyril’s lynching of Hypatia, Achilles’ conquest of the Lesbians, and the invention of beer. If you’re not familiar with any of these and why they’re important, there’s still time, and Ricochet will help over the upcoming month.

If you don’t care about any of these, come for the company, the food, the laughs, and the sheer gosh darn awesomeness of hanging out with America’s finest people. Food and alcohol for the whole weekend will set you back $80, plus $12 if you want to shoot, plus $12 if you want to go to the museum, and minus $10 for each meal you don’t want to join us for. We’d recommend staying at the Hilton to maximize convenience ($109/ night), but you can get hotels for less than half that if you prefer (talk to Amy if you want a different deal). You can fly in to Kansas City Airport and we will handle all your transportation after that. It may or may not change your life (it might!) but it’ll change the way that you see Ricochet and it’ll be a blast.

If you are keen to attend, please send Amy Schley an email. Her gmail address is her full name, without spaces.

….Achilles’ conquest of the Lesbians, and the invention of beer.

I believe Amy and I are supposed to be the Lesbians in question. Sadly, the postponement of my knee surgery makes it much less likely that I’ll be able to attend.

    Nonetheless, I’ll keep y’all posted.

James Of England: Achilles’ conquest of the Lesbians,

Your participation was under St. Cyril’s silencing of the women. I thought I’d try to avoid any feminine connotation to our celebration of ancient warriors for the reason Frank notes.

I’d do better at avoiding humorlessness if there was more to be cheerful about in the news that you might not be joining us. It’s very sad and, worse, such an unpleasant reason for non-attendance for you.

I’m not sure how that would work. I’m not even sure about skyping, because I think that people are somewhat shy already and that the event being broadcast, even to you, might increase that. We might be able to do a showcase for you at the end?

    Oppressor!

James, you have the weirdest way of avoiding racy connotations ;-)

Unfortunately, attending this would be on top of four straight weeks on the road, so I can’t make it.

If there is any free/unstructured time available (and it sort of sounds like there might not be!), I’d suggest adding the Arabia Steamboat Museum to the list of optional activities. It’s one of the most fascinating museum experiences I’ve ever had.

just point me to some music and/or instructional vids on y-tube…my imagnation will supply the rest…a group ‘Hi, Nanda!’ at some point will suffice, kind sir…I was being only a slight bit facetious…If it could, acquiring dance skills would become a consuming passion. (Grin, chuckle)

#9 I’ve been to it several years ago, and it was great then.  They have probably increased the artifacts on display since then.  If memory serves, the only fatality when the boat sank was that of a mule.  The river changed course, which made it possible to excavate it.

Well, I could certainly imagine our Ricochetti in a Manga-style portrait.
