Queuing For the Rumor of Diapers – Maracaibo, Venezuela

Cecilo AcostaLast month, this was the view a few blocks away from where I teach: Venezuelans wait all day for the chance to get into a price-controlled, government grocery store within Centro Comercial Costa Verde in Maracaibo, Venezuela.

It was rumored that diapers would be available.

Clearly, this is all due to the United States using its imperialist power to prevent goods from reaching Venezuela.

Shhhh… You don’t want people to catch on that this is all part of Michelle’s latest health and fitness scheme.

I didn’t know we had a member living in Venezuela. I have been trying to following the collapse of Venezuela but we don’t get much news and what we do get I am not sure it’s all true. Could you be convinced to post more often Timothy? Would you describe your daily life?

You can download a free-to-print English version of the game instruction booklet and game pieces (but not, it seems, the board itself) from Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance:

It is a nightmare what is occurring in that nation.

BARCELONA, Venezuela — By morning, three newborns were already dead.

The day had begun with the usual hazards: chronic shortages of antibiotics, intravenous solutions, even food. Then a blackout swept over the city, shutting down the respirators in the maternity ward.

Doctors kept ailing infants alive by pumping air into their lungs by hand for hours. By nightfall, four more newborns had died.

“The death of a baby is our daily bread,” said Dr. Osleidy Camejo, a surgeon in the nation’s capital, Caracas, referring to the toll from Venezuela’s collapsing hospitals…“It is like something from the 19th century,” said Dr. Christian Pino, a surgeon at the hospital.

Not to worry. Maduro has ordered the takeover of any business or factory that closed  ( most because it was impossible to operate without a loss) . That should solve everything.

Venezuelan diapers are the best in the world.  People come from all over and will stand in line for hours just on the rumor that they haven’t all been sold out.   They’re completely reusable, and like the government, don’t ever have to be replaced or clean out.

Such greed. Better crack down on the amount of American imperialist media they’re consuming. It’s clearly giving them counter-revolutionary ideas.

Just the best. You really can’t believe how great these diapers are. If you appreciate really great diapers, you’ll definitely agree. Only at the Sharper Image.

I’m going to say something that many will consider racist, insensitive and imperialistic, so grab your blanky and a warm puppy and head to a safe space.

Venezuela was a basket case before Chávez and he and Nicolás Maduro have only made things worse.

They borrowed heavily from China and printed tons of Bolivars. Consequently inflation runs officially at 150% and unofficially at 800% per year. We do the same thing but get away with it because we still have a fairly robust private economy and the blessings of the world’s reserve currency. (And that could end within a generation.)

They nationalized industry in the name of “fairness” and made everyone (outside of government) equally poor.

The question becomes this: Do they have the culture that will allow them to get their political and economic acts together? Or are people who are outside of the Nortwestern European cultural traditions simply doomed to this kind of folly and corruption without end?

Looks like my native Romania when I was born, but more colorful & with revolts, it seems. My older brothers queued up like these folks when they were kids… I’m going to skip the jokes about Sen. Sanders & so forth. It’s going to get worse, I fear.

But at least they don’t have to pay sales tax on the diapers or female sanitary products.  They’re in much better shape than the evil US.
