Rick Santorum Suspending Campaign
Published in Uncategorized(CNN)Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is ending his presidential bid, two Republican sources told CNN.
He is expected to make the announcement Wednesday night and will endorse a candidate.
Santorum won the 2012 Iowa caucuses and ended that race with the second-most number of delegates to eventually GOP nominee Mitt Romney. But he was unable to capture any momentum this year, despite extensive barnstorming efforts in Iowa.
He is the third Republican presidential candidate to drop out after Monday’s caucuses. Mike Huckabee ended his campaign that night, and Rand Paul suspended his campaign Wednesday morning.
Quick, someone tell the Cruz campaign not to repeat this CNN report or everyone will accuse them of dirty cheating.
I think the open space in the photo above tells us why.
So, on the office pool of who will be left standing on February 15, I’ve pegged three so far who I expected to be out. I still have Christie, Fiorina, Gilmore to go.
I think it would be appropriate to enact a law that states that once you’ve run for president twice and failed, you’re done. (sarcasm…sort of on)
You’d think this would be common knowledge by these perpetual candidates but sadly, it’s not. I also blame “those who are close” to the candidate for encouraging them to go at it again.
How does CNN know? If a Santorum falls in a forest, does anyone really hear it?
It’s entirely possible that Gilmore has quit and nobody noticed.
At this point, I’m almost expecting a Cruz, Trump, Rubio, Gilmore final four. The man seems impervious to mass rejection.
How does he afford to travel from state to state? A hotel room in Iowa or New Hampshire costs money and I would be surprised if he is raising enough to stay at a Motel 6. Unless he is staying with relatives. What about gas? Is he hitchhiking?
Gilmore doesn’t sleep…he waits.
Heh, that would make such a great movie!
A shame. I rather liked him in 2012, and was fascinated by his apparent surge, but he didn’t make it and rarely does one get a strong second chance at a presidential nomination.
Mr. Gilmore Doesn’t Go to Washington–starring Robt. DeNiro in his 15th consecutive “I only did for the money” role. Boffo!
Maybe Gilmore doesn’t really campaign. I’ve not seen any news reports showing him at any rally, town hall, coffee, whatever.
Maybe he just shows up for the debates. I hear that when you’re retired, you have a lot of time on your hands.
Who cares? Santorum is a complete non-entity. “Don’t let the door hit ya…”
I imagine several of these candidates read about Ronald Reagan needing three tries to win the Republican nomination, then looked into the mirror and deluded themselves into thinking the Gipper was staring back.
So we’re down to what, 15…20 candidates now?
He’s a strong social conservative who’s articulate, but that ship apparently has sailed (see Huckabee Mike). It doesn’t help when you lose your home state in a Senatorial election either.
Gilmore doesn’t need to campaign. He can lead a horse to water…and make it drink.
Hoyacon is hot today. LOL, OL, OL, OL
Is there actually a real Hoya who is a “con?” I thought they drilled that out of you. You sir or mam are impressive.
I know Santorum from a decade back. He could be a bit arrogant. Though he is a fine campaigner and great debater. He could have actually ripped Trump had he been given the opportunity. Rick has made a ton of money as a lobbyist and a little money as a commentator. In the shadow political business (see Pataki, Gilmore, Huckabee, Santorum, Gingrish, Palin, etc), you have to keep your name in lights as long as possible. That keeps you on Fox or CNN, which keeps your books selling and phone ringing for lobbying.
Rick will likely endorse, ???? Cruz on style – a bit off-putting, judgmental. Trump on a long shot for fame and fortune. And, Rubio for an under-Secretary job.
Gotta keep the name in lights.
Santorum really hurt himself with the too-enthusiastic embrace of Specter over Toomey. I understand all the reasons he did so, but it killed his conservative cred.
I’ve been razzing Gilmore, who was a decent governor. But Virginia governor is a tough launching pad for President. Only a single term, so you need a Senate seat or power Cabinet position to build the constituencies needed for a realistic shot. His 2008 loss to Mark Warner was nearly as ignominious as Santorum’s 2006 loss.
Pink Floyd’s guitarist is running for President? Look I don’t want to start another birther thread but I don’t think he’s even a citizen…
The main reason I supported him in 2012 (other than ABR) was his understanding of the need to appeal to the working stiff. It’s not that I’m a union gal, I just see the disastrous consequences of Romney and the GOP elites emphasizing the entrepreneurial/(upper) middle class in all their policy proposals.
It would be nice to be able to cobble together some kind of coalition again, even though I don’t see us ever being as successful as Reagan.
Definitely one needs an amount of overconfidence to run for this office. Hindsight reveals one’s chances weren’t nearly what one expected, but you won’t go into this race if you didn’t think you could make it.
Considering he was tantalizingly close enough last time, I’m sure he’d assume he could do better this time. Forget Reagan, McCain got his second chance after defeat! Why not Rick?
Well, Mr. Santorum, you see …
It’s great to see reality set in for these guys, but I’m keeping the champagne chilled for when Jeb! suspends.
Explains his cynical campaign:
What are the employment prospects of a defeated former Senator and a twice-failed presidential candidates?
McDonalds night shift manager? Stocker at Walmart?
Every campaign is slightly different from the last. Remember the Super PACs were going to buy every election!
I’m kind of amazed Gillmore is there. At this point, I’m now predicting this will be a four man race: Cruz, Rubio, Trump, and Gillmore.
Whatever it is, as he does it, he’ll be muttering under his breath, “But I was the next in line.”
Mock away but Gilmore is…
