A couple of times a year, we assemble our far flung editorial staff (that’s Troy Senik, Jon Gabriel, Claire Berlinski, and Tom Meyer) on the Ricochet Podcast and let them riff on the issues of the day and give some dap to their favorite Ricochet member posts of the recent past. And in this, the last show of the Summer of Trump®, that’s exactly what we’ve done.

Spoiler alert: Lileks checks in from the Minnesota State Fair with an important poll update. See you after Labor Day!

Claire is a Bon Vivant.  She cannot be contained by an editor’s podcast, nor should she be. Every time she is a guest on a ‘normal’ podcast it is for her to speak eloquently about European affairs but she has so much more to say, and I, frankly, want to hear it! Please get her on the regular podcat more often and don’t confine her to the to just her perspective on life in Europe.  I want to hear her talk more about the complexities of hard money or anything else she would like to speak about.  Great podcast.

When I saw this musical selection, I was hoping that meant I got a shout-out from the editors.  Oh well, until next time… ;-)

Jon Gabriel, speaking from Arizona, mentioned the families who have perished trying to get into the United States each summer.

This is the most important reason to bring order to the border crossing.

If Walmart has a free television giveaway for the first 1,000 customers who show up on a particular day, we hold them responsible for keeping order. We say they should know there will be people acting out in this chaotic situation.

Similarly, the United States needs to accept responsibility for orderliness, to prevent people from dying trying to get in.

Stephen Dawson’s post “How Australia Stopped Illegal Immigration” talks about this same phenomenon in which people were charged thousands of dollars to make dangerous water crossings on the idea that they could enter Australia. When Australia finally got control of their immigration process, these deaths stopped too. Dawson pointed out that Australia presently gives more people asylum than does any other country in the world.

When Clinton and Bush had their debates during the presidential campaign in 1992, there was a lot of concern about Haitian refugees who wanted to come to the United States. Clinton said they should come. Bush said that was not a good answer, that we needed to fix Haiti somehow.

Clinton spoke irresponsibly. People in Haiti got wind of what he had said and promptly set out in a rickety boat for America. Four hundred people died trying to get here.

I have always blamed him for those deaths.

Rob said he hoped the 3 American heroes in France were well “hosted”. Since the three have expressed their Christian faith, I hope Rob meant punch and cookies.

100% with Troy.  When a doctor says “Well…,”  I say “OK, just hit me with that mallet, do what you need to do, and tell me when it’s over.”

I don’t need any more details past “well.”

Welcome to College Football season! The ebb of my “contributions” around these parts begins on Wednesdays and picks up towards Saturday nights.

The stars at night are big and bright in deep in the heart of Texas, but leaves little time to PhotoShop.

I second the idea of giving Claire her own podcast, maybe for insomniacs over here, and a big raise for taking the project.

When you hold podcasts with multiple talkers you need to address the issue of people talking over each other. This podcast needed a ringmaster to enable each person to address the questions raised.

The disorganised nature of this podcast and the poor sound quality was a turn off – literally for me.

Maybe not a big point, but I cringed when Ms. Berlinski said that, to paraphrase, everyone takes the Thalys train between Amsterdam and Paris. Isn’t that kind of an elitist impression? I would think the slow train or a bus, or even a discount plane ticket are cheaper ways to travel that route.

Enjoyed the podcast, but one small complaint.  You guys talk all over each other!  Maybe no solution when everyone is on the phone, but I feel like I missed a lot of good stuff because 3 people were talking at once.

Am I the only one not enamored with Claire Berlinski? Yes, give her her own podcast that I can skip so she isn’t stepping on the lines and explaining the jokes of those I really want to hear.

You are not the only one.  I think it’s really rude the way she talks over people, especially when the question was specifically directed at someone else.

On Trump: I have been peddling the idea that Trump’s run is focused on a high position in a Republican Administration rather than actually winning the nomination. No one pays any attention, but I still think I’m closer to the truth than other opinions. I believe he can be taken out of contention by a job offer from a for real candidate (or candidates). At what point? Maybe when his numbers, in his opinion, peak. Then he looks for the DEAL. He won’t get cabinet, but something like Assistant Sec. of Far Eastern Trade. He’s always bitching about China eating our lunch. Or, HUD. Trump does know real estate. This a businessman, used to getting his way, looking for a contract. A smart pol in the race should make a deal with him to drop out in exchange for X. Commentators often overlook patronage. It’s a huge factor in politics. Trump got off to a great start and is holding his position, but the final stretch is a way off. It’s his leverage to get out of the private sector and add government to his resume. That, I think, is where his ego is driving him. Of course, anyone who makes a deal with Trump, and happens to get elected, will have to find a way to shut him up and stop him from taking credit for anything good that occurs. LOL with that one.

Rob Long you are completely wrong about Congress never bringing Obama to heal. Congress has forced Obama on several occasions to eat his hat.  Those times two times were the Tax Cuts.  After 2010 elections and Boehner and the newly Republican congress forced him to eat those Tax Cuts he was not happy for two years.

The McConnel deal which forced him to make almost 90 percent of the George W Bush tax cuts permament.  Something that a Republican controlled Congress, Senate and President failed to do while working together is another time.

Speaking as someone whose anti-Trump bona fides are well established, I have to say I think his signing the pledge is a big deal. This is a guy who a) gains the majority of his support from his (brutal) honesty and b) has made billions in real estate and thus does not sign a contract lightly, even if it isn’t legally binding.

Don’t worry, I’ll be back to reminding y’all about abortion, the NHS, and wealth taxes soon enough.
