That Hair

If it’s in depth political analysis and thinking you’re looking for, mazel tov, you’ve come to the right place. But before we get to that, we do a deep dive in to newly declared presidential candidate Rand Paul’s hair. Trust us folks, you’re not going to hear this on any MSM outlets, so buckle in. Then, Ricochet’s own Claire Berlinski checks in from France, aka The World’s Most Conservative Country®. Well, according to her, any how. Then, the great Norman Podhoretz (perhaps you’ve listened to one of his kids recently?) stops by to discuss his latest must read in Commentary,  Obama’s Right (yes, you read that right) and give a fascinating overview of the Middle East. It’s getting pretty hairy over there.

Music from this week’s episode:

Hair by Hair (The Original Broadway Cast Recording)

The opening sequence for the Ricochet Podcast was composed and produced by James Lileks.

Whenever I see the phrase “Obama’s right,” I immediately think “that which is to the right of Obama,” since the other interpretation is so implausible.  In that sense, of course, “Obama’s right” essentially means virtually everything.

Today, the Minnesota Chairman of Rand Paul for President unveiled the campaign’s new posters to reflect the choice of a running mate…

My first thought as I scrolled past the teaser – “Looks like Pat’s back this week…”

I believe this is what Mr Podhoretz is talking about, & wisely:

You can decide who’s Mr. Iran & who’s Mr. Obama. A close reading of the scene & its place in the action of the movie & the relevance of that to American politics circa 2015 forthcoming-

Don’t let’s everyone start playing Delilah! Don’t let’s anyone start playing Tom Jones, for that matter!

By the way, I vote yes on the referendum.  Everybody loves Claire.  Even if she was incorrect about French youth unemployment.

C’est vraiment un plaisir a ecouter Claire! Especially since she says what other smart people have been saying: France is to blame for the EU. I am not sure what she says about France (or Germany) never recovering is completely accurate, though. We’re only three generations out from that last horrific war, after all, and only now are we seeing generations of young French and Germans who deem it safe- socially, psychologically, culturally- proud of their history again. Nice to hear Rob point out that the EU is the culmination of the Napoleonic Dream, too. Helemaal, precies korrekt, mijnheer Lang, ik gaa akkord!

I must also agree with Mr. Podhoretz on Iran. For all the reasons he adduced, it is gravely, dangerously ignorant bordering on clinically insane to pretend, as Barack Obama is doing,  that the Iranians will not act on their professed desires to wipe the Jews off the face of the Earth- starting with Israel. Their current supreme leader has stated that he would gladly let Tehran go up in flames to destroy the “Zionist Entity” and he meant every syllable.

That was my sentiment but thank Friday I’m out of rope.

This coming generation may be the one to see war with opposing nuclear forces. The deal by the president seems to be setting the stage for children who are as young as 6 years old to be called to fight, defend and protect the United States if a country with an old history of aggressions backs such continued behavior with a new nuclear arsenal.  John Oliver is right; you have to make your point in terms that people care about. President Obama’s deal may very well mean the kindergarteners who attended the Easter Egg Roll this year will face fighting a nuclear war after high school graduation. As if it’s not enough their generation is already broke.

There is a big difference between MAD and the current situation. The USSR and the USA existed as nations to further and protect the interest of their nation. Iran and Israel exist with perceived greater purposes, respectively. Iran exists to further Islam as they interpret it. Israel exists to provide one established place of protection for the Jews given centuries of violent persecution. We’re talking about salvation, and each is less concerned with destruction compared to respectively assured salvation.

There is no peaceful intention in a fortified, underground, and undisclosed uranium enrichment facility just as there is no transparent intention in a private, personal, premeditated, and undisclosed email server.

I listened to the podcast today.  Then I went back and listened to the comments on Rand Paul’s hair.

Silly boys.  You have no idea what curly hair is like.  If you run a comb through you hair, it goes straight through it.  If you get wet, you hair flattens down against your head.  If you go where it is humid, at worst your hair may get frizzy.  Hair products? You don’t need no stinkin’ hair products!

Let me tell you what curly hair does.  On the off chance that you are foolish enough to try and comb your hair, it gets stuck…and the parts that are combed double in volume.  If you hair gets wet, it takes a while for it to get wet, because of the rough surface.  Worse than actually getting wet, if it gets humid, it begins a dual process of unpredictable curls and whorls in crazy directions, while simultaneously expanding volume through a cloud of frizz.  I’m a girl, and a girly one at that, so I use a variety of hair products in my quest for smooth, manageable, shiny curls.

I feel like Randy has bigger things on his mind than managing his curls…though just a dollop of frizz control cream could make a big difference.

So, give him a break…at least on his hair.
