Episode 53: Sex and God at Yale

Direct Link to MP3 File

Something has gone profoundly wrong in American higher education. It is visible at the top–that is, at the leading universities—and, as usual, it then tends to filter down to the more standard institutions. Yale University gave me my first academic job (Assistant Professor of Psychology) many years ago and, since then, I have often heard from former colleagues about disorder and decline in its “sacred halls.” Nathan Harden, a frequent contributor to Ricochet and recent graduate of Yale, has done a book telling the sad story and trying to search out its causes. Here’s our recent discussion about how hedonism and mindlessness have undermined tradition and intellectual seriousness at one (and not the only one) of our great educational strongholds.

I find the Direct link to MP3 file keeps dropping out. Maybe it’s an ‘across the pond’ issue.

Although having a Yale is still a ticket to the upper echelons of American society, so it is still worth it to pay a fortune to be exposed to this hedonism (as long as your head is on straight before you get there)

But kids get this stuff at no name schools that also charge a fortune and don’t have the same gravitas as a Yale degree has. What’s the point in  paying a fortune to send your child to Bard College to be brainwashed and will end up lecturing you about how gender is a social construct at the dinner table when they are still living at home at 30 years of age.  No thank you kids,  if you want a degree in post modern underwater basketweaving and want to to a school that doesn’t have a grading system you can pay for that yourself, and my couch costs $1000 a month to surf on.

    Great podcast as usual Milt

Very interesting taking the posts “Money & Politics with Jim Pethokoukis — Episode 22: Is College Worth It?” and “The Milt Rosenberg Show – Episode 53: Sex and God at Yale” together. Especially since I’m listening to the Audible recording of Charles Murray’s “Coming Apart:  The State of White America” wherein he goes on at length about how the broad and narrow elites compete to get their children into Yale and other elite universities.

Nathan’s book is very good and the comments on Amazon about are amusing to read too. His posts on Ricochet educated me. I remember watching Stephen Coubert’s speech at Northwestern and it is just unbelievable with its casual references to whorehouses, as if this doe snot hurt anyone.

Milt asked would you send your kids to Yale?

My one son could have gone to an Ivy League university but he chose to stay in Canada and do engineering co-op at U of Waterloo. I have to say that I did not push him to the US due to these commencement speeches and reading Nathan’s work.
