Hammered

We’re into the meat of the primary season now, so the time for talk is over — it’s time for action! Unless you produce a podcast — then we need more talk. And this week, we bring you two of the best talkers in the biz: the great John O’Sullivan and Fox News analyst and columnist and editor for The Washington Times Monica Crowley.

We talk Ted, Trump, Bernie, Hillary, and yes, even some folk music. Break out your harmonicas and listen in. And we’ll see you in New Hampshire this weekend.

Music from this week’s episode:

If I Had A Hammer by Trini Lopez.

The opening sequence for the Ricochet Podcast was composed and produced by James Lileks.

Monica Crowley is basically speaking in tongues with this Trump business.  Trump won’t put any blue states in play – if you look at his disapproval numbers he is by far the least liked figure on either side of the aisle.  That’s tough to do, because Hillary is despised.

Worse: this fantastical notion that Hillary somehow won’t be the Democrat nominee… that’s internet conspiracy mongering of the first order.

Anger and a sense of betrayal are hot this year – witness Bernie and Trump – but they aren’t something on which you can build a national political movement.  “I’m going to smash everybody who is a roadblock to my infantile rage!”  Fantastic.

Role reversal – James finally does some interrupting!  Then reverts to Minnesota nice, hoping nobody dropped the relish tray from shock.

I have to agree with Majestyk , Hillary is a sick fanatic who will never ever give up this monomaniacal quest , she ‘s like ( take your pick)

    Captain Ahab
Richard Gere in Officer and a Gentleman, she has nowhere else to go.
Marie Barone from Everybody Loves Raymond, she will destroy us all before giving up an ounce of power
Samson who will tear down the temple and take us all out with her

I just can’ t imagine any scenario in which she would give up, quite simply , she terrifies me.

It becomes vital therefore to keep a pail of water nearby at all times.

As an addendum to Rob Long’s long-ago theory that Donald J. Trump and Bill Clinton concocted the Trump candidacy over Cohibas and Remy Martin (Louis XIII Black Pearl?), it finally occurred to me today that the ultimate and elaborately disguised object of the exercise is to get the old lady into the slammer and Bill off the leash.  “Sometimes even a marriage of convenience can get inconvenient, h’unh Hil?” will be the line as the cell-door clanks shut.

I’ve been living in Israel for over 30 years now, from way back in the bad old socialist days. Believe me, socialism just assures that *only* those close to the trough get any goodies at all. A car was referred to as a “private”, Ben Gurion decided that we weren’t going to get color television even though American shows were already in color, and it was considered unthinkable that a Sephardic Jew would be able to acquire even a black and white set.

Millennial here: my generation sees the USSR as “communist”, not “socialist”. When we say “socialism”, we mean Sweden, France, and Germany, not the USSR.

I agree with Lileks about Bernie not really being truthful about the cost to them of his proposed bennies. He was at first, but he’s begun to hedge because I’m sure someone told him that even liberals like to keep their money. The line I heard him say most recently (news recording; I don’t follow his speeches in real time) was, “We will raise taxes. We will raise taxes.” Most of my liberal friends think that means on fat cats and corporations, definitely not on them. I’m on my way to 63 and make a good deal less than $50,000 a year, so I probably don’t have that much to worry about taxwise, but all my liberal friends who are much younger and who make a lot more than that (most around $100,000—good for them!) do not think their taxes will be raised. They might, though, if Bernie had told the truth and said, “We will raise taxes, and this includes on the middle class, the entire middle class, because this is the only way we can get to single-payer.” Most of his followers, who are young and have massive college debts and feel like they don’t really need healthcare at their age—unless they had a mother like mine who said, you will get health insurance as soon as you get a job—will balk at that. No, there’s no real socialist conversation going on here.

Maybe one can laud Bernie for being consistent.  To me he just lacks intellectual curiosity. Born before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor Bernie was in college in the early ’60s and while at the University of Chicago he belonged to CORE, SNCC, and the Young People’s Socialist League among other far-left organizations.

Now, over a half century later he’s a calcified pinko instead of a young communist.  Consistent?  Well, yeah, ok, but that isn’t a virtue when you’ve believed in the same idiocy for about 70 years.  More like a learning disability.

I would not have been convinced of Crowley’s statement regarding Democrats supporting Trump, but I just heard a similar statement from a Democrat this afternoon who didn’t even know who the Republican candidates were!  I was amazed to hear her make a similar statement when listening this afternoon.

Fine work, gents. Especially enjoyed the guests. Questioning was somewhat monopolized ( just sayin), but I hadn’t heard a lot from either of them this election season. Been hanging out in “all the wrong (cyber) places”, I guess. Never feel like one can get too many different takes on any subject of this complexity and import. Oh, did I fail to mention FUN. Thanks. Note to Rob L.: looking forward to GLOP NH debate special but won’t be there. When will we get it on Ricochet Net?

Serial murderers are consistent in what they do, too – not quite sure what they do is laurel material, though.  I appreciate the thought about admiring the fact that at least Bernie’s consistent, but I don’t admire people who are consistently and stubbornly wrong, every single time, and refuse to be swayed.

That’s not being virtuous.  It’s dogmatic.

Another most interesting and informative podcast…I confess that as much as I loathe the Donald, the prospect of a President HRC fills me with such dread that I feel the Trumpian temptation. It is not just her criminality, her lies, and her sheer incompetence. It is also the cynicism of her elite supporters in powerful places, including the media, for whom this is a test of power: If they can put this tired old fraud into the White House, they can pick anyone they wish.

But if Monica Crowley is right, i.e. if HRC’s candidacy is doomed, then why should she have any time for Trump. Cruz can surely beat Biden. (Are there any qualified Republican Navaho women out there to go up against Fauxcahontas?)

On another note: I was mildly surprised that anyone on the flagship Ricochet podcast should remember “If I had a hammer…” But it was a pleasant surprise, a reminder that the generation gap is not unbridgeable…I hear those old “folksongs” from the Sixties with a measure of disgust, though it is mixed, I confess, with a sense of guilty nostalgia. I was then on the hard left and had good reason to know that the “paranoid right” of the time was not far off the mark: We weren’t old-fashioned liberals; we were in the Communist camp. And yet though I am now a solid conservative, I am still a sucker for the strum of a guitar, remembering my long-lost youth…John O’Sullivan is not, of course, the first to say that socialism is what fills the void when religion and patriotism are discarded, but I was glad to hear him remind us. In Europe, socialism reflects, I have long suspected, a yearning for the medieval, with university-educated bureaucrats as neo-aristocrats ruling the peasantry. That is, I think, what made me a socialist. In America, on the other hand, it constitutes a truly alien religion, a rejection of the nation’s foundation and tradition. It is worse than indifference to patriotism; it is anti-patriotism.
