Breakfast In America

Let’s get right to the point: we’ve got Larry Kudlow (shameless plug: listen to Kudlow and Pawlenty’s Money & Politics podcast) who may or may not be the next Senator from Connecticut to school on why Donald Trump ought to be taken seriously and other matters both political and economic, followed by the great Michael Barone, who joins us from the side of the road in South Carolina. He breaks down the primary scene and gives us a look ahead as well. Finally, Bernie and Al break bread — as one wag on Twitter put it, “guy who wants to raise taxes has breakfast with guy who doesn’t pay them.”

Music from this week’s episode:

It was refreshing to hear  Larry Kudlow re his positive discussion about Trump. Fiorina was my preference originally but find myself increasingly leaning toward Trump. The influential podcasters and editors on here seem to all be most negative about Trump. In fact, I suspect a “group think,” which disparages anyone who takes Trump seriously. It’s tough to pay for a service where your opinions are not respected. I’m not 100% sold on Trump, but I do like to hear from people who have positive things to say. Thank you for Larry Kudlow.

Declaring war on the Islamic State would be a recognition that it is an actual state and that its soldiers are lawful combatants. Do we really want to do that?

Stay vocal. I have the same issues and I hope the owners of Ricochet realize their membership goals can be met with an outreach to Trumps supporters.

Umbra Fractus:Trump/Kasich? I threw up in my mouth when Mr. Kudlow said that.

Kudlow is enough of a known quantity that his commentary made me feel better about the coming era of Trump. Kasich would be a strategic move to lock in a key state for the General Election. Cruz wouldn’t add anything since Texas is a solid Red State. Rubio could be a plus for the Florida vote. (Bush would serve the same purpose but with all of the bad blood I would think that Rubio would be preferred over Bush and I just can’t see Bush taking the #2 slot to Trump. Of courses the Bushes have made some strange friends from time to time after elections.) Kudlow’s priorities are the economy and national defense. If he says those are the Donald’s priorities as well I can live with it, even though I am worried about the continuation of Executive overreach.

I’m kind of with Peter in that Mr. Kudlow made me marginally less certain that President Trump would be a catastrophe in terms of policy, but I’m still not convinced he’ll respect the Constitution, especially after Leigh’s post about Rubio’s record of being willing to decrease his own power. “Executive overreach” is not a small thing.

So guys, if you didn’t move to New Zeland after the first 6 months of Barry Obama’s fantasy stroll into the brave new world of Hope and Change, why would you do so (figuratively) with a Republican Senate, House and marginal Republican president? Could it be worse? Btw, I remain a Fiorina fan. I like her face.

Depressing to hear the founders not pushing back on Larry Kudlow face to face. If I wouldn’t have heard the end of the podcast I would have despaired about Ricochet.

Note that Kudlow was pushing Kasich, Trump, and Jeb! When will the Trumpsters realize that Trump authoritarianism is just a better vehicle for more top-down control of the plebs by the establishment.

Ricochet would be more interesting if the hosts dared to push back on guests they do not agree with. I understand that it may mean that the guest will not come back (and in the case of Larry K it would be a low price to pay) but the end result of this discussion was almost as bad as Hannity’s fawning Trump interview. We used to make fun of the dems subservient questions to their demi-gods. Now we see Hannity (expected) and Ricochet (disappointing) do the same.

Here is the dilemma of primary season. Above are both Trump backers and Trump detractors upset with Ricochet. Primaries are family spats that last way beyond Thanksgiving. Even if you don’t side with Aunt Evelyn or try to stay neutral while Sissy and Grandpa are going at it with Uncle Bob, you’re going to piss somebody off. It goes with the territory.

Gird your loins and do battle… But in a civilized way. That’s what you pay your money for.

You should listen to practically every other Ricochet Podcast we’ve released since Trump started running. I’d also recommend Need To Know, GLoP, Mad Dogs, Andrew Klavan’s new show, and the new Commentary Magazine Podcast. You’ll hear pretty much wall to wall criticism of Trump.

In the past six months, we’ve received hundreds of emails, Tweets, texts, smoke signals, and every other form of communication excoriating the hosts for being too anti-Trump. So for two weeks in a row we’ve booked guests who were pro-Trump and let them make their case uninterrupted.

We’ll now return to our regularly scheduled programming.

Nice Rant Yeti, ricochet isn’t supposed to be an echo chamber.
Also I’m looking forward to Larry’s announcement. I may volunteer for his campaign if he decides to run,but my track record in Connecticut has not been very good since my candidates tend to lose.

    Kudlow sounded like an idiot.

I also wish the guys would’ve pushed back more. Maybe it’s not in their best interests to annoy the guest, but he made a fool of himself. I’m happy to ignore kudlow from here on.

So we get two weeks and no more? Not wanting to seem unappreciative, but if the last sentence refers to the prior one, it seems to reinforce the ‘take your balance and shut up” theory. Tell me the last sentence was not meant to convey that please?

If we match a Trump with a decently led GOP congress, the probability of executive overreach is greatly reduced.

If the donors go to war over the interruption of the gravy train, we might have a problem, but it will not be the executive overreach problem, it will be a cronyism problem. I worry about cronyism far more than executive overreach.

Sure… So you support the only candidate who is unabashedly pro-cronyism. Uncle Donny’s magic elixer, it’s good for what ails ya. You want a wall? Done. We’ve got the wall. Obamacare? It’s gone. Done. Repealed. ISIS? We’re going to beat the hell out of ’em! They’re gone. Done. And no campaign money from anyone. No donors. That’s done. Measles, the common cold, baldness. Gone! Uncle Donny’s elixer, done!

Larry likes the way he sounds. Make America great again. Tear down this broken system… Hope! Change! Someone from outside, a community organizer, someone who doesn’t do Washington’s politics, someone who gets things done!

8 more years! ‘Cause uncle Donny’s magic elixer is the same snake oil we got from uncle Barry just 8 short years ago. But damned if we aren’t angry! … Just like everyone was in ’08.

If Trump was the person Larry described on the podcast instead of the person he his on the stump, on twitter and in the debates, I’d be fine with him.

    But he’s not

He dosen’t have a message he has catchphrases. He has a reprehensible history of unrepentant personal, ethical, and professional failure.

His primary character traits are boastfulness, pride, narcissism, predatory greed, fraud, cruelty, infidelity and selfishness. He’s praised these traits as his means of “winning”.

If you vote for him, you’ll get just that.

I greatly appreciate Larry Kudlow’s view on DT.  Who doesn’t like being talked off the ledge?  But if it comes up at lunch at The Gilded Truffle,  I’d love to know how he squares his (entirely, completely, totally) correct praise of Cruz for taking on ethanol subsidies in Iowa and  the DT’s vocal presence with the rest of the baying pack of cowards.  If I’m concerned that the game is rigged (and that that’s the central problem), why do I care who’s doing the rigging or in whose favor the rigging gets done?  I just want it unrigged.

The Kudlow segment was/is a RINO fiesta. Did I just hear Trump/Kasich? Heaven help us. Kudlow is a Wall St. insider Country Clubber. I’m utterly disinterested in what this character has to say.  And why we didn’t hear Peter, Rob, anyone yelp and howl in protest says more than I care to contemplate about soul of Ricochet.
