Does this story from the fall of the Roman republic hold wisdom for America in her troubled moment? In this episode of Young Heretics, Spencer Klavan explores how Gaius Gracchus tries and fails to propose an entirely new constitution. But it’s more fun than that! An unsolved murder mystery, a trip to Africa, and a deadly riot later, we will find our takeaway from this story.

Colleen McCullough’s ‘Master of Rome’ novels are really quite good. She has done her research. The first two in the series are her best, “First Man in Rome” and “The Grass Crown.”

The Great Courses Plus is great for learning ancient Greek, both Homeric and Biblical. You can do a trial to see if it’s for you. Requires real daily work to make significant progress.

McCullough kickstarted my serious interest in classical history. In her novels she’d mention the bibliography she used to flesh out the details, and invited anyone to request a copy. I did so – it was over 40 pages as of The Grass Crown, and I imagine it grew larger as the series continued. I’m still working my way through the bibliography 25+ years later.
Once again so glad that I am ‘catching up’ on these podcasts. Don’t know if I’m ready to tackle classical Greek but I appreciate the information.
