What To Do When Famous People Express Conservative Ideas

This week on Tracked and Targeted we join Three Men and a Podcast as they discuss the cultural world they found on their doorstep this morning.

A BLOCK: Jane Says, “I’m Done With Government.”

Schlichter wants to know how you can be a rebel when you’re a shill for the state. This comes just as Jane’s Addiction’s front man Perry Farrel says conservative things. If you need advice for dealing with other people when they express conservative ideas, you won’t want to miss this.

From Farrel’s interview with Billboard:

“Somebody once said to me, ‘I’m a Democrat socially, I’m a Republican fiscally.’ For me, I kind of am almost like that when it comes to politics because I think Obama’s got it all wrong. The people that he’s taxing are absolutely the hardest-working people and a lot of these people are the people that can’t really afford the taxes that he’s asking. The super-rich can afford to pay more. It doesn’t really put much of a dent in their pocket, but he’s taxing people that are really middle-class. I think it starts at $250,000; that’s not a lot of money in California. And what is the first thing he does when he gets in office? Pays the banks off. So he can say what he wants. I thought he was a mediocre president.”

B BLOCK: True Detective, Faux Outrage

When HBO announced two of the new start of the next True Detective mini-series, somebody somewhere cried bloody murder and a bunch of other jumped on the bandwagon.

Producer’s Note: Because we produce this podcast with the Ricochet audience in mind, no need to go Google “Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard.” Just click here.

C BLOCK: Tony Has His Mind on L Money and L Money on Millennials

An unassuming writer somewhere on the internet wrote a list of 50 reasons why corporations should be worried about millennials. Multiply that by three hosts and we have about 150 jokes about millennials in just under 10 minutes.

D-DAWG BLOCK: Free For All

Did somebody really suggest Tony Katz looks like Ron Jeremy? Certianly that has to be a CoC violation, punishable by being forced to listen to both this podcast and last week’s to figure out what Katz is ranting about.

L’Shanah Tova everyone!

    I understand a Republican’s viewpoint, I really do. I don’t dislike them as much as I used to. ”

Yeah, I wouldn’t get too excited about Perry there. That attitude is really no different than someone like a Steve Jobs that, while he didn’t want Democrats squashing business, he was still a committed Democrat.

And do you really read all 21 comments to get material for your podcast? You are very hard working conservatives.

Small style issue, Owen. I don’t know if this can be accomplished in the current Ricochet tech state, but you might want to add “Tracked and Targeted” to the post headline, for those of us who don’t open every headline.

I hate to break it to Perry, but “paying a bit more” when you’re paying 97% of all income taxes collected stops sounding reasonable at about the 50% of all income taxes collected level.

The problem with banalities is the generalized, sweeping nature of the statement. If you get what I mean. But he does seem to get that even a married couple, say, making $200K year between them, and has a house and kids, is about as far from rich as you can be, especially in places like California. I’m not saying they’re suffering; I’m saying, as he seems to realize, that at a certain point asking for more is wrong. What he doesn’t seem to understand is why the gov’t keeps asking for more, and what in the hell are they spending it on?

Oh, and Perry – don’t forget the $17 trillion we’ve borrowed that we have to pay back. That’s just in addition to what we’re currently being scraped for by the IRS.

I agree with your point, but I just wanted say that we shouldn’t use the term “ask” when talking about raising taxes. The government doesn’t “ask” people to pay higher taxes!

I am going to assume that I am “one of the repressed.” So I cut this off at short of 10 minutes. Whoever these people are for, they are not for the positions I find important.

Finally, more haters! I was beginning to wonder what was wrong. Soon, we will try this live and people can complain in real time. That really is the highest and best use of the Internet. Well, that and never having to think about toilet paper purchases again thanks to my Amazon Prime subscription.

I know you have a no guest policy, but if you could include Peter Robinson in one of these I think it would be loads of fun, that is if his head didn’t explode or he didn’t become so freaked out that he tried to strangle one of you with the sweater tied around his neck.

We haven’t ruled out guests filling in when one of us is unavailable. There is a strict vetting policy however, mostly having to do with a lack of pants.

Thanks for the heads up on “True Detectives” season two. I have mixed feelings on the concept, but learning that there will be a new cast gives a big boost.

For me, “True Detectives” was uneven from the start. I nearly quit after the first two episodes. Still, there was enough to barely keep me, and the “good enough” got better. Performances by those two was top notch. And the guys were pretty good, too. <g>

And yet…it kinda fell flat again at the end. Part of this is due to how they handled “The King in Yellow,” and yes, I had already read that quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore. Playing with that matter for a TV show is playing with eldritch fire, so they had to drop it. I can appreciate it in a certain sense, since, ahem <SPOILERS>, the book sorta does the same thing, but still.

Another part of flat-falling is how, in my experience, the episodes used a “stretching out” of tension that felt like padding, or “running out the clock.” Such that, for TD’s big ending, I felt like they had switched the channel over to the ending of Senor Speilberg’s “E.T.” because, uh, they had run out of paint.

Acting great, camera work great. I fault the writing.

I enjoy the chemistry between these three guys, the fast-pace, and the irreverence of their humor. Also, it’s aggressive in attacking liberalism’s failures & hypocrisies, while exploring how to make conservatism more welcoming to non-conservatives.

I’m sure you guys would NEVER be intentionally non-inclusive, but I was swilling an Old Fashioned when I heard you say that “no one drinks rye.” I’m not easily offended (being that I’m a white male,) and true, it was made with a merely rye-heavy Bonded Old Grand-Dad. But still, I think I experienced my first microaggression (being that I’m a white male.) I won’t even mention that I’m a Grateful Dead fan; it’s one of two things I have in common with Ann Coulter (being that I’m a white male.) Did I just reveal too much?

I like that theory, as it’s pretty clever. Though Rye, New York isn’t really the next town over from New Rochelle … Mamaroneck is. But “drinking whisky in Mamaroneck” lacks a certain lyrical quality.

I listen to you boys on my way to work in the morning, so I enjoy the noise, energy level and laughter (no sarcasm from me). This show is a complete departure from the rest of Ricochet stuff which tends to be a bit more subdued, so I appreciate the opportunity to hear some very funny conservative guys yapping and like that the site will give you guys a spot to work this out (which shows that conservatives love diversity).

Free for all topic next week–the Bill Simmons kerfuffle. I agree with others that his crime was in giving wedgies to his Bristol Bosses, not that he (like everyone else) called the NFL Commissar names. I like Simmons’ podcast, and really like the Grantland site (Holly Anderson rules!), but honestly, how much NBA stuff can normal people take? I listened to one of his things with Jalen Rose and for an hour they talked about player contracts, not players or the game. Yeesh.

    Keep it up, fellas–great tabasco!
