Here in Japan we recoil at the sheer humanitarian horror already beginning in Afghanistan. At the same time, we cannot help thinking of the geopolitical implications for ourselves. On The Pacific Century, it is pointed out that if Taiwan falls, Japan will be seriously compromised. Throughout my lifetime, the great majority of Japanese have been content (or at least resigned) to live under the American defense umbrella–and, contrary to widespread misunderstanding, it has not been a “free ride”…But what now? When the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff speaks favorably of Critical Race Theory and the President of the United States himself goes along with the lunacy that little boys who think that they are little girls are, in fact, little girls, even as in Kabul real women are being dragged into the street and shot, what is surprising is that not that some Japanese are thinking “we need to build our own island fortress” but rather that so far those numbers are still few.
Maybe they’re unwilling to give up the family’s extra iphones?
