Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
Jim Geraghty of National Review and Rich McFadden of Radio America react to the first night of CNN Democratic presidential debates. They discuss the moderate candidates challenging Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren on the feasibility of their left-wing agendas. They lament the structure of presidential debates and the time constraints placed on candidates. And they respond to Marianne Williamson’s performance with her warnings of “dark psychic forces.”

That crazy martini is not as crazy as one might think. Marianne is the Democratic reflection of Trump. She is a star and has star quality. While Trump has some qualities we (the Republican side) don’t like, such as being as rude as a Democrat, Marianne has some qualities that Republicans might be seduced by. As I think it was Jim said, “She’s playing a different game.” We don’t know yet how that will work out, but Trump also played a different game against the generic Republican candidate.
Marianne Williamson is a star? Maybe in PRC (People’s Republic of California) and a few other weird places. But she’s far from a household name probably in even most households in THOSE places, let alone the rest of the country. I doubt she has anywhere near the name recognition that Trump had even before 2016. If the Dems really want to run a “star” it needs to be Oprah or someone along that line.
Oprah definitely has higher name recognition. But as JPod mentions in the latest GLoP, Marianne has been out there for nearly forty years doing her thing, and there are more people who have heard of her than you might think. I’m just a simple Midwestern boy, and I started hearing about her around 1991 or 1992.
A fair number have heard of her, but in what context? Writing books and giving talks about crystals and stuff? I just don’t think that is much of a path to the presidency.
I understand what you are saying, but one never knows. Besides which, I’m all for supporting the best possible candidate on the other side. Unfortunately for the world, she looks like the one.
You said “marTUNI” at 9:46 Jim. I’ve enjoyed all of the Tree Martinis. They stimulate lots of deep thoughts and conversations. However, this was truly worth pointing out. :)
Oh darn, I meant “three”. See why I don’t comment much.
“Tree Martunis, Bartender.”
“Sorry, fellah, you’ve had enough already. Go home and sleep it off.”
The problem with supporting the best possible candidate on the other side, is… what if they win? It’s still going to be a disaster. Whereas if they nominate (another) dunce or loon, they’re much less likely to win.
That is a strategy that maximizes risk. Not that it matters. They will have their loon.
