    Jim is wrong again.

    I had occasion to straighten out this claim with a car salesman, back in the 80s.

    The value of my home – or car, or anything else – is not just what someone else is willing to pay for it, IF I WON’T SELL IT FOR THAT PRICE.  If I won’t sell it for that price, then it’s worth more.

    The obvious counter to that is, “Well that’s just what it’s worth to YOU.”  My response is, “What YOU want to pay for it is just what it’s worth to YOU.”

    And really, especially since a car dealer is planning to re-sell it for MORE, then THEY actually think it’s worth more, too!

    The car salesman was obviously surprised by my response, they must have found that claim – really just a slogan – works on people who don’t go beyond first-order thinking.
