Uh-oh.  There could be fanboy explosions all over this place.

I really liked the podcast.  I’m not sure why James Lileks seems not to like Ron Granier’s score for The Omega Man.  I think it’s very well done.  For some reason I like that 70s synthesizer sound.

My parents took me to see Return of the Jedi when it came out. I was 5 years old, and all I remember was that Jabba the Hutt scared the [CoC] out of me. Surprisingly the Emperor, who I now consider to be a contender for creepiest character in film history, didn’t make much of an impression on me.

Two or three years later I watched it again, and it was fine. It’s now my favorite of the series. (6 > 5 > 7 > 4 > 3 > 1 > 2. I note that the top three all have “Not directed by George Lucas” in common.)

The first time I actually watched a Star Wars movie was when Showtime was having a free weekend (they occasionally had those in the early 80’s) and Empire came on.

Loved this Episode, especially the little excursion into early 1960’s rock. Which makes me think of my favorite place to listen to such music: a wonderful Key Food supermarket on 5th Ave. here in Brooklyn that, due to its large size, wide aisles, and pre-Whole Foods gestalt, feels like it’s straight out of Animal House. A market with a parking lot! A market that’s now slated to disappear or be downsized by a developer and a sale. Ok, sorry for the ramble.

Blue Yeti:1977 at the Uptown Theater in Washington DC. Skipped school to see it.

Same here, except for the skipping school part.  I lived in Arlington and would drive up during the day to get my tickets for that evening.  I saw it there at least ten times that summer.  For me and my nerd friends it was basically our hangout place.  I also cheated and stayed in my seat for the next showing on the night I first saw it.  Four hours straight of Star Wars and it seemed like no time at all.  There were three other people with me (a double date) and all of us wanted to see it again.

Randy Webster:I must have seen it in a theater during the first run, though I don’t remember. I saw it the second time in the summer of ’78 from the back of a pickup at a drive-in (remember them?) with my future wife and a couple of friends on Old Maryville Pike.

Where is that place?  Is Old Maryville Pike the Knoxville end of what we call Old Knoxville Highway over here in Blount County?  I’ve been to a few movies at the Parkway Theater (the drive-in on the way out to the Smokies, where I’m from), but I don’t think that included any of the Star Wars movies.  I was in elementary school and remember my friends talking about it, but I can’t remember when I actually went to see it.  We did, for sure.

Sorry for the late chime-in to the conversation, but I didn’t find the iTunes link until now.

Yes, Maryville Pike is the Knoxville end of Old Knoxville Hwy.  The theater isn’t there anymore.  I don’t even remember exactly where it was.  I’ll ask my wife.  She might remember the name.

Does the Parkway still show movies?  I notice that there’s a flea market there sometimes, but the screen seems to be in OK shape.

Oh, yes, the Parkway is still in business as a theater. The flea market is there in the off-season, like right now, but they’re still on in warm weather. Lots of double features including first-run movies.

There’s talk that a Wal-Mart wants to buy out the property and build there. I’m a fan of Walmart in general, but boy I hope this plan doesn’t go through! Right at that spot you start to get a good view of Chilhowee Mountain, and a big store of any kind would be an eyesore.

I DID ask my wife.  She says that my memory is faulty, that the theater was called the Lakemont, and was on Alcoa Hwy just north of where Singleton Station Rd. joins, sort of where the Buddies BBQ used to be.

Oh, maybe where the Green Acres Flea Market is? There’s Lakemont Drive there.

In that area, though she says it was farther south.
