I think Professor Epstein missed the point of the domestic drug production bill. The problem is not getting coronavirus vaccine. It is that there are many drugs that keep US citizens alive manufactured in China.

If the Chinese pharmaceutical supply chain collapses due to coronavirus-imposed disruptions internal to China that means US citizens are in danger of not being able to get drugs required to keep them healthy. A domestic source of supply of these drugs eases that problem.

He was saying that senator Hawley’s proposal is not viable for killing the corona virus because creating a new supply chain will take too long.

Maybe long term we should consider a different global supply chain but that’s a different topic.

Which was missing the point of Hawley’s proposal.

Hawley’s proposal has nothing to do with killing the corona virus. It is about bringing drug manufacturing back to the US so if the pharmaceutical supply chain collapses (as might by caused by oh. a massive outbreak of a disease shutting down Chinese industries) Americans can still get the drugs they need because we have a second source of the drugs.

Are most of our prescriptions manufactured in China?

i thought FDA had strict rules about that.

Our prescriptions are written in the US. Many of our prescription medicines are manufactured in China, and with a significant percentage, only in China.

And, it is not against the law as long as they meed FDA guidelines.
