Ricochet’s only married podcasters finally return to the inter-webs with a typically feisty episode as they’re joined by (a Hemingway’s Podcast first!) Ricochet member Mr. Brown. They cover all the scandals, conspiracy theories, the inside dope on Mollie’s participation in Reason TV’s abortion debate, and of course, The Fight of The Week®.

Crow’s Nest: Psst. Mark. Brother. Yeah, over here (gestures).

We live in the YouTube age. If you’re unsure how to do something routine, but manly (like winterize a lawnmower) because you’ve never done it before….well, yeah…..there’s a video for that.

But, wait….do you have a tractor instead of a mower?

Yeah, there’s a video for that too.

Because America is awesome. · 13 minutes ago

Is there a video for all “routine but manly” tasks? If so, things are looking good for me. · 28 minutes ago

Well, not in one comprehensive video. But if you search individual tasks you may have luck.

    On a lighter note:

    Ask, and ye shall receive

Knock and the door shall open unto you

    Seek and ye shall find.

    And, then, perhaps ascend

The only complaint I have is not enough giggling from Mollie..

I am confused about the need for the moderator, though.

Mollie – perhaps a thread on the concept of natural rights? It’s been brought up before as truism in many Ricochet conversations, and I was surprised it was.

I felt myself getting angry at Molly over the fight of the week. So, I guess that means you picked a good one.

    Benghazi

Stipulating for argument that the least worst decision was to do nothing that night, the question remains why weren’t we prepared to do something.

Gates and Panetta both mocked people who asked with “it takes time to get planes in the air”

With the literally trillions of dollars we spend on defense, do you mean to tell me that on September 11, we didn’t have any assets ready to respond? If not, why not?

    IRS Scandal

Only a few have observed that the effect of the IRS targeting Tea Party and conservative groups was to defund them, consequently rendering them ineffective in get out the vote and making the conservative case in 2012.

I believe this was a deliberate act of voter suppression.

    Disciplining Children in Public

You need to master the “Vulcan Nerve Pinch.” Grasp the child by the arm, very firmly depress your thumb into the child’s bicep, and whisper in the child’s ear “I’ll stop when you settle down.”

With a little practice, you won’t even have to get up to take your children out of the church service.

To the casual observer, it looks like you are just holding the child’s arm.

Works on children from when they can associate cause and effect to puberty.

Results vary but it worked on all 5 of my kids.

Just run the mower until all the gas runs out before putting it away for the winter. Easy enough.

The fight hit too close to home. I was probably more uncomfortable than Mr. Brown.

There was not a need for one… nor was there a plan for one. I was just there when a podcast broke out.

Last year I had to replace the motors for the power windows in my truck. Yup, there was a fairly specific video on YouTube, and on the Internet I also found someplace selling the motors at waaay below list.

“Catholic computers shutting off all over the country”

Yeah, ’cause my spam filter blocks heretics.

Enjoyable and informative. Let’s not forget that the IRS gauleiters not only committed misfeasance, but also malfeasance like leaking confidential donor lists to hostile activist groups.

Re: Natural law. To me morality is logical, and there is evidence all around us to prove it.

As for natural law, when I bring up non traditional marriages, the prohibitionist quote Natural Law. Nowhere in my reading is heterogeneous marriage, and particularly prevention of other types of unions, part of Natural law. That heterosexual marriage is logical is self evident. That it is necessary to prohibit anything else is not.

On a pragmatic level, contracts enforce our morality, the source is irrelevant – Gd or Nature or Biology evolving to the logical good (me of little faith etc.)

But boxing people into utilitarian and natural law both as truism is a premature. There is room for discussion here, clearly because so many quote it “god like”, and know nothing of competing thoughts….

I think we need a thread n it.

I’m glad you are back. I always enjoy your back and forth and find both of you very interesting and informative. Having said that, would it be terribly rude to say that too much time is spent on the Fight of the Week? I always end up thinking – “you fought about THAT?” I realize it’s a joke-y segment of the podcast. I also am married and understand that “fights” about silly things (“do you have to stab your broccoli like that?”) are common.

However, I do enjoy hearing about your kids and your parenting experiences. I hope you will be sharing about your adoption process.

Miss Manners suggests a variation of that for disciplining OTHER people’s children in public. Grab their arm, say in a very loud, friendly voice, “You’d better be careful dear, someone might get hurt”, while applying just enough pressure on the arm to let the child know who that “someone” is.

Having said that, I did like the image of the child being dragged out of the church service screaming that they didn’t want to be spanked.
