James is heading off on his annual sojourn but takes emough time to stop in and sit at his familar place at the long, boomarang-patterned Formica counter and talk a little Fourth of July and things that go BOOOOM in the night.

Boomarang?
That diner always sounds bustling…surprised James always gets the same seat!
The cicada mention reminds me of something I read a few months ago that one day your parents put you down and never picked you up again.
A&W’s teen burger had bacon, that’s what made it so fabulous. Cold frosty glass of root beer and a burger with bacon. Heaven.
Yes, and now only the Papa Burger still has such a name.
For a while, when I lived in Phoenix, there was a Diamond Shamrock gas/convenience store at the corner, that had a small A&W inside. That was wonderful! After a while, for some reason that came out and was replaced by a couple stands with plastic-wrapped trays of tortilla chips and dispensers of hot cheese sauce and chili sauce. So disappointing.
When I was on the way out of Arizona in 2020, I passed by what I guess was the last A&W remaining in the state, just outside Tucson. But I didn’t really want to stop, both for time and because I was driving a large U-Haul truck.
I’m finally getting to this on 16 OCT. Summer is truly over.
