Fascinating. I read the poem at 18 in a college English class. I was freshman, but it was an upper level class, I cannot remember how I got in it. I definitely wanted to have the sophistication of saying I understood fancy English literature. The Wasteland completely defeated me, I never took another such class. It is kind of reassuring, looking back fifty years, that I admitted I did not understand that stuff, and moved on, especially if all the commentary on it that I had to read was fundamentally wrong.
If course, that in itself doesn’t negate the postulate that I was just too dumb, evidence for which was to accumulate in coming years.
