This American subscriber lives in Switzerland, but gets around Western Europe regularly. I suspect, based on my discussions with citizen friends in the original NATO countries, that there are only these countries which would fight to defend themselves, but hardly anyone else, NATO or not: the UK, France…and Switzerland, not a member of NATO. Every one of my German friends believes having any sort of armed forces in Europe today is unnecessary. Germany, we need to accept, has become a pacifist country. As for Eastern Europe and the newer NATO members, I cannot say. But, it really must be asked if NATO has become more of a liability to the USA rather than cooperatively shared asset. This is obviously the case with Turkey.
