VDH says Ukraine should not be invited into NATO. It isn’t as supererogatory as he implies, nor as provocative to a righteously indignant Putinistan.

The US and NATO guaranteed Ukraine’s security to induce it to give up the nuclear missiles it was left holding after the USSR dissolved. Eventual complete membership is favored by all political parties, and makes perfect sense as a confirmation of the security guarantees.

Bringing Ukraine into NATO is a red line for Putin, the crossing of which will compel him to press his big red button. 90+ percent of the Russian population will support him in blowing everything to h*ll.

If we really feel bad about making Ukraine a promise we cannot keep, we can give back the weapons we took, or pay them and let them buy some new ones if they want them. Of course, that also could trigger the big red button.
