Very interesting point – why is California getting off so easy, given all the traffic to and from China, even Wuhan specifically? VDH suggests that lots of Californians already had it months ago, before it even had a name. I guess that could be checked now that they have a test for those who have had it.

Add to that, different jurisdictions are calculating their statistics in different ways.

If someone dies of heart disease, diabetes, emphysema, and coronavirus, how do you count the death? How do the authorities tell you to count the death?

When a cousin, a doctor in Soviet Ukraine, visited us in 1980, she told us that they were routinely told to put down tuberculosis cases as pneumonia; because tuberculosis is a poverty disease and looks bad in the statistics.

She had to leave her husband and children back in Ukraine as hostages for her return, by the way.

I am partway through, and I love the brutal takedown of the European Union. That may be the best one I’ve ever heard.

@rufusrjones — Short, sweet, and damning, as far as the EU is concerned.

Maybe Europe’s effective (relatively speaking) alliance, NATO, will have to extend its purview from Russian tanks to Chinese viruses …

Could part of it be that a lot of people who come into PRC (People’s Republic of California) from PRC (China) aren’t staying there?

Another possibility is that if people in PRC (People’s Republic of California) have been subject to constant lower-intensity “bombardment” of various diseases from PRC (China) for years, maybe one more virus was less of a problem.
