    My father Roger Easton started working on his predecessor system to GPS, Timation, in 1964. He spoke with Dr. Arnold Shostak in April 1964 about the hydrogen maser which was developed in 1960. They agreed that it made passive ranging feasible (time difference between satellite and receiver indicates the distance between them). Here’s a prediction he made in 1974 about GPS leading to the time web.

    In 2006, he received the National Medal of Technology from President Bush.
