You dissed Erica Durance in Smallville. No Allison Mack wasn’t Lois-by-another-name. and Erica Durance was both hot and decent as Lois before the Planet.

Just so. Allison Mack’s “Chloe Sullivan“ was more like an anti-Lois on Smallville, hopelessly stuck in the friend zone while Clark falls in love with first Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) and then Lois Lane (Erica Durance).

Mack was very good on Smallville. That she, playing a “non-canonical” character who could have been killed off at any time, survived all ten seasons, testifies to that. Which makes her cult brainwashing all the more tragic. And such a cult: it makes Scientology look positively benign by comparison.

But to return to Loises: my original opinion of Erica Durance was not very positive, but I found she was a good comic actress. This was important because, as the producers of Smallville understood, Lois Lane is a comic character. She constantly gets in trouble and needs rescue, and never, ever catches on that the man sitting next to her in the office is really Superman. Thus, she must be brave to the point of foolhardiness, and a bit thick.

This is also why Margot Kidder’s classic portrayal of Lois Lane is one of the best. Maybe my favorite scene is where she extols the benefits of fresh squeezed orange juice to the new guy, Clark Kent, even as she stubs out yet another cigarette in her horrible overflowing ashtray.

I like Amy Adams but, let’s face it, as Lois Lane she basically plays Amy Adams.
