I think Downton Abbey does not qualify as a soap opera, because it lacks that quality of cycling of characters through stories as the writers desperately try to think of something to happen in the next episode.

Instead these characters are all going somewhere. They are not just spinning their wheels.

Nor is it a show just for women. There are a lot of male characters who are not fantasy wish fulfillment stereotypes — like many of the men on, say, the Hallmark Channel.

I’m with JVL on this. I absolutely loved Downton Abbey’s first season, but the quality dropped a great deal in the second. I’m generally willing to extend a TV show a lot of rope if it used to be good, but I turned it off in disgust the moment Lord Grantham kissed one of the maids.

Nothing to do with that. It was just entirely out of character for him and clearly there to create conflict. And that was just the last straw after fifty other things.

‘Twas tongue in cheek, pard …

With large, complex artistic works like novels and movies and TV shows, we each make the decision how much weight to put on the inevitable errors versus the good parts.

In this particular case, the plausibility of the main story leaves something to be desired.
