I went from watching The Highwaymen on Netflix to being dragged to see Beach Bum on Saturday. I can’t describe how much Beach Bum sucked compared to The Highwaymen.

I can’t tell whether JVL is trolling in his comments about either Beach Bum or “late-stage capitalism”, whatever that is. The film makes him mad at Florida because it shows a bunch of “trash people” (in Sonny’s formulation), living in a way he doesn’t like-gaming the system and such. (Though he doesn’t specify exactly how.) He throws in that this is a result of “late-stage capitalism”, as if gaming the system for what I assume are taxpayer-funded services is somehow the fault of free trade or capitalism or markets. Maybe they are, in the indirect sense that they’ve made us so wealthy that such gaming is allowed, but I don’t see how that is the fault of those things. (And it’s a good problem to have, relatively speaking.) But he also based this rant on scenes from a fictional movie, as if it were a picture of perfect verisimilitude.

It sounds as if he read that Piketty book recently (Capital in the Twenty-First Century) and has come over all militant about it. Am I missing something? Did me mean something other than what I took from it? It’d be great if JVL himself would respond, but I don’t think the Dudes read these comments. So my fellow Ricochetti, what do you think?

Also, I’m tired of Florida-bashing. We get it, they’re hicks who don’t live they way you think they should. Whatever.

JVL has always had this thing about being a communist; it’s one of his longest running gags. And I’m never sure if he’s serious or not.

Yeah, it’s hard to tell. I always took him to be joking that he’s a communist because he’s more critical of the free market than other conservatives. His venting here, though, makes me wonder.
