Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
In this latest episode, JVL, Vic, and Sonny talk about their pandemic pastimes and the future of the Sub-Beacon: The show is moving to subbeacon.com! We all hope you can join us by subscribing on Patreon. It’ll be great—just like when Laverne and Shirley moved to L.A. Or when Three’s Company became Three’s a Crowd. Or when Danny Cooksey joined Diff’rent Strokes. What could possibly go wrong?

The best thing about this is the parody of “Good Riddance/Time of Your Life” at the end.
Or when Cousin Oliver joined The Brady Bunch?
My daughter watches Doc McStuffins and noticed that Doc’s voice changed. I checked IMDb and the actress did change at one point. One of the other actors is Robbie Rist and I wondered why that name was familiar. Clicked on him and that’s Cousin Oliver. He’s kept busy.
It was disappointing to find out that this was not the last episode, but I perked up when they said it was moving to Patreon. That’s the end of it for me. No way am I emailing JVL to ask him to let me listen for free, and I’m not ponying up any ducats for it. Farewell, podcast increasingly dominated by rambling talk that doesn’t go anywhere.
Rambling talk that doesn’t go anywhere deserves to be the name of a podcast.
Well, “Dudes chatting” is the [un]official theme of this podcast.
I’ve already signed up on Patreon. I also started kicking info the SSEU podcast too.
For me, 2020 showed how much daylight there is between “dudes chatting” and “rambling talk that doesn’t go anywhere.” Part of it is that I always enjoyed the actual reviews and discussion of movies much more than the “dudes chatting” part of the podcast. Since they’ve stopped talking about movies so much with the advent of the lockdowns, there’s much more “dudes chatting,” with a proportional increase of JVL’s sneering, misanthropic condescension. Now he mostly rubs me the wrong way. Maybe if Vic and Sonny start a podcast without JVL, and without any of the people they’ve had fill in over the years, I’ll listen to that.
I enjoyed the higher testosterone level when Mary Katherine Ham sat in for JVL. I think they reviewed a movie though, which is a strength of the show.
That’s true. MKH is always great.
Man you need to working in Hollywood. “Sneering misanthropic condescension” and “He mostly rubs me the wrong way” are also great titles for a whole host of things.
If this was the PIT there would be about five different jokes I could make here.
Well, I do work in Silicon Valley, so I’m pretty familiar with sneering misanthropic condescension. “Sneering misanthropic condescension” seems like a good title for an art rock album, with “He mostly rubs me the wrong way” either the first or last track. What do you think? What should we call the band?
Heh, I thought about that when I commented as well.
Crooked Timber?
I figured $2/month was tolerable. That’s $1 for Vic and $1 for Sonny.
I am so glad the show survives. I have no problem paying them for all the joy the show has provided me over the years. Easy money to spend. Glad it continues.
Except for JVL bragging the Bulwark saved democracy. Up your medication dose man, thats just laughable.
Can I do the cheap thing and sign up in a year and binge?
Probably. When I donated, I was given a private RSS feed and was able to download the two existing podcasts.
A lot of podcasts only “archive” a few episodes that are easily accessed. 52 weeks is likely pushing it.
They really need to rename the podcast, since they’re really not associated with the Standard or the Beacon anymore.
In the spirit of “dudes chatting”, I’d like to propose the name “The Sonny Bunch”.
Or how about Sub Sandwich? Just need to figure out which of them is in the middle… Maybe they could take turns…
They released a new one today. JVL has already blocked someone on Patreon because he pledged $2 a month, hoping $1 for Last and $1 for Bunch could allow them to quit working at their horrible day jobs.
I hope it wasn’t me. But I mentioned supporting Bunch and Matus.
You mean TODAY today? I see the one about the Star Wars Holiday Special, but that actually came out yesterday.
It would be funny to see how many $2 pledges they get and somehow poll which person is being snubbed. Following your lead, I too signed up for $2.
Wow, does that mean I’ve become an Influencer? At last, success!
I’m talking about the Star Wars one. It was new in my queue this morning but I didn’t check the release date.
Yes. You should let advertisers know so you can get cash in.
The Weekly Standard is no more, so given their recent performance, I’d say a return to “The Sub-Standard” is in order.
Same. Mr. Charlotte and I like to save up several episodes and then listen to them on long road trips. I’m happy to throw a few bucks a month their way.
