To properly appreciate Flash Gordon, you pretty much have to look past the comically inept leads and enjoy the excellent European actors in all the supporting roles:  Brian Blessed, Timothy Dalton, Max von Sydow, Peter Wyngarde, Mariangela Melato, and the stunning Ornella Muti — who, as the guys comment admiringly, raises the film’s rating from PG to PG-13 by her mere presence.

The smart screenplay by Lorenzo Semple, Jr. eschews the tired trope of the hero saving the day singlehandedly.  Instead, and more realistically, Flash Gordon must persuade Ming’s subject races — who hate each other almost as much as they hate Ming — to unite against him.

There’s plenty of clever dialogue:  see the film’s quotes page in Imdb.  My favorite isn’t there, however.  When the allies assault Ming’s citadel during his wedding to Dale Arden, Ming’s General Kala (Melato) orders all the ray cannons to fire, blandly announcing to the crowd that the cannons are “in continuous salute” to Ming’s wedding.

I do not wear a mask unless the store will not let me in without one. Also, I favor fast reopening. Make of that what you will.
