Green Book winning Best Picture might be the last gasp of the older generation, sort of like when John Wayne won Best Actor for True Grit

After the progressives started complaining about GB, I went to see it. I found it a little dull, and I figured I would be able to write the rest of the movie in my own head without bothering to sit through it all.

I feel a little smug about all the attention being given these days to Mahershala Ali. I discovered him in the sci-fi series, The 4400, in which he superbly played an American soldier from the early Fifties transported into the present. He falls in love with a white woman and is perplexed by the fact that nobody complains about it and nobody is after him.

Those noble, polite, soberly-dressed, God-fearing African Americans I see in movies and documentaries about the Fifties and early Sixties — where did they go? I want them back! Or did they ever really exist?

I don’t know if there’s an assumption that all the context is known when this podcast was created. I love movies and saw most of those you discussed, but I don’t want to watch the Oscars, and I didn’t know what ya’all were talking about for some of this, so I felt pretty frustrated that nothing was explained. For example, I had to google the director of bohemian rhapsody to know what that was all about. Maybe it was just me? I’d’ve liked a 5 second framing of some of the topics.
