On this special bonus edition of Need To Know, Mona and Jay cover a veritable panoply of issues: whether or not the Washington Redskins should change their name, the recent SCOTUS decisions, who Reagan could have appointed to the Supreme Court instead of Kennedy, judges overriding legislatures — good and bad, that transgendered child in Colorado, and the never discussed downside of affirmative action. Also, like Colbert, Mona and Jay don’t see color, Myron Magnet, and yes, they miss W.

Happy Fourth, everyone!

please forgive the ignorance of a foreigner but was not your country founded as a republic and not a democracy? Was not the constitution designed to prevent the central government passing laws that failed to treat all persons equally or that treated minorities in a different way?I know it is arguable that if that was the intention it has already failed (e.g has a majority effectively decided that the rich – however defined – are a minority that it is permissable to persecute by progressive rates of taxation). To argue that whatever the majority vote for is to be accepted as just seems rather dangerous.

Mascots — I’m the child of Irish immigrants and that little, ugly, fists-up, pug faced, redhead that Notre Dame uses has irked me for some time, not that I’m going to sue for being ‘offended’ but the ‘Fighting Irish’ moniker while OK for the 69th Regiment doesn’t reflect the Irish men I know who while not being pacifistic are more apathetic. The little man should be shrugging his shoulders and saying ‘Who gives a (fill in blank)’.

Pew study on DOMA Decision- Did you get the feeling the network’s delirium was a little like V-J Day?

Boston Celtics, New York Knickerbockers? No one finds those offensive.

There are Catholic colleges and high schools known as the “Crusaders.” You know they will be targeted at some point, if it hasn’t happened already.

I have been putting off saying this for thirty-seven episodes, but I really wish Jay didn’t sound like he is flirting heavily with Mona.

The Redskins, who moved to Washington from Boston, were named after white people who dressed up in order to dump tea into Boston Harbor.

But somehow changing the name of the team to Teapartiers seems a non-starter.

As for the bigger problems facing Native Americans, I remember once when we were visiting family in Yakima, WA. We went on a drive to find a local historic site, and, taking a wrong turn, stumbled into the Yakama Reservation. What I saw was dirty, bare-footed children, a pack of loose dogs, etc. It was a flashback to when I lived in South America. Also up near Bellingham, another reservation. You can tell exactly where the dividing line is (no sign needed) by the stark contrast in the condition of the homes.

What a tragedy for all of these people. It’s inexcusable that it is considered too politically incorrect to honestly examine the causes of their poverty and dysfunction. What would it take for Native Americans to break out of that? Are there any signs of hope there?

I loved the W stories! Who in our current crop or our up-and-comers has the ability to make those kinds of connections?

This is my favorite of the podcasts. I love listening to your intelligent conversation and analysis. Keep ’em coming!

Also, I loved the part about “Why I’m a Conservative.” I’m playing that for my teenage sons, hoping to start a conversation.

Other Christian groups (Lutheran, Baptist, etc.) are also called “Crusaders.”
