By the way, if the next visit with Harry Shearer delves into non-politics stuff, I’d be grateful if someone asks him about his reminiscences of his work on one of my favorite movies, The Right Stuff. I’d really love to hear about him meeting Chuck Yeager (especially as Chuck is wheelchair-bound now and probably won’t be with us much longer). I’d read the Christopher Nolan-edited special issue of Wired a couple of years back that commemorated the movie, and was surprised to learn that Harry and Jeff Goldblum had no lines written for them. Phillip Kaufman just let them improvise. Everything you hear from them in that movie, they came up with themselves.

Douglas:Listening to the guests, once again, I’m struck by how far apart the movers and shakers of the Republican Party… including the media, old and new… are from average people on the right. Advocating “entangling alliances”, endless foreign interventions, etc, while mocking the very great number of people concerned about such things.

We have been involved in foreign intervention since 1941, continually. Why, in the face of radical Islam, should we retreat now? We didn’t surrender to the Soviets. Why should we surrender to terrorism?

I think you are only disagreeing because I’m a Wolverine and you’re a Buckeye:)

I’m a Georgia Bulldog relocated to Buckeye land.

A fella from West Homestead has gotta think fast, talk fast, and act fast…

Chris Campion: Is it an accident that Rob’s mug always has a significantly pinched look in these photoshops?

It’s not particularly nefarious. It’s just that we’ve never gathered our intrepid trio into a studio and covered a full range of emotions in front of a green screen. The headshots are mainly video captures from Redeye, Uncommon Knowledge and various projects that Lileks has done over the years. I obviously collect and reuse. (Peter’s new eyewear caused a flurry of new cuttings.)

None are ideal since the resolution tends to vary so much. And even full HD video doesn’t match the resolution of the stock photography I often use for pieces and parts.

Time to find that perfect expression is a luxury I don’t have. From the end of recording to posting on the site is often less than 90 minutes and depending on the complexity of the composite (my record is 36 layers) there’s just not time to pour through hours of video for extra material.

The odd expressions usually add to the entertainment value for me.

If you run out of things to talk about on Podcast CCC, here’s a two-part question for Pat Sajak: do you have an autographed copy of “Vanna Speaks”, and if so do you know where it is ?

As for whether there is still an Ed McMahon on late night, that would be Andy Richter on Conan’s TBS show.

    “I’ll have a lemonade.  In a clean glass.”  wasn’t scripted?  That’s awesome.
