The Senator and The Doctor

No, we did not book Rand Paul on this supersized edition of The Big Show (90 minutes of clever and civil conversation!), we booked Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) to discuss the stimulus packages (speaking of super-sized), the federal  government’s response to the crisis, and a boots-on-ground report from Ohio. And our good friend and go to authority on all things medical, Dr. George Savage checks up on us and gives an update on the models (no, not those kind of models), the research, and whether sheltering at home and shutting down the economy is actually working. This week’s Lileks Post of The Week (we’ll get that jingle timed correctly one of these days — promise) asks us not to mock Joe Biden (eh, maybe…), and Rob Long saunters around a deserted Manhattan and has some thoughts.

Music from this week’s show: Taking A Walk by John Prine

Ricochet Audio Network: Ricochet Podcast #489

    This is actually #491.

    Typo — fixed.

I think the count for Law Talk is also wrong

They renumbered when Lawtalk production moved from Ricochet to Hoover.

For the record, they did pronounce my name correctly.

“Godbey” is just like “God be” with you.

    :)

I, for one, will continue to mock Joe Biden as long as he is trying to gain power.

In the end, I agree, though it feels a bit like kicking a stray, injured dog.  But a dog that has rabies that could kill you if given the chance.

I recall when the left called Reagan an “amiable dunce”, though he was nothing of the sort.  We have seen over the years every conservative or Republican tarnished the same way by Democrats and a complicit press.  Well now, we have a true, live specimen of this, heading toward a major party nomination.  We have no choice but to call it out, as sad as it might be to watch.

Okay but the dog having rabies isn’t its fault.  Biden being a statist hack, IS his fault.

Always nice to have Senator Romney back on the podcast.  By the way, did he say anything helpful?  Nope, just a lot of political you-know-what, and just to show that he cares, the throwaway line, “we need more testing”.  These are the words of a feckless, risk-averse, establishment politician.  And whose administration did he lead the OMB?  Right, the one that cut all the spending.  Can Dr. Savage move to Ohio and launch a primary challenge?   What a breath of fresh air.

But what I really want to know is who captured Rob’s brain?  Pretty much everything he said was reasonable and made a whole lot of sense!  This podcast alone is worth the monthly subscription and is the only one I make sure never to miss.

The Washburn tower in Minneapolis was a great place to drink a Special Export and smoke a joint in the early 80’s. @jameslikeks

I’ll have to make a road trip and check it out again.

The GLoP numbering has been off for a long time.  They had two number 54s or something, years ago.

In Japan, blowing one’s nose in public is much frowned upon.

Even before the current crisis, masks were a common sight, and now when I briefly go out, I see most people wearing them–especially women. Japanese law renders impossible the sort of draconian measures Peter Robinson describes in America, but social conformity is, of course, a powerful force. A four-character Sino-Japanese phrase seen constantly on television is gaishutsu-jishuku ‘self-restraint in going out’. Jishuku recalls the time when, back in late 1988 and early 1989 the Showa Emperor was terminally ill. There was none-too-subtle pressure to refrain from year-end and New Year’s partying. The circumstances this time are, of course, different–and Japanese society is not quite what it was thirty years ago…Peter Robinson may be interested to know that barber shops are not on the list of businesses that are to be closed.

    Once again, a fine podcast!

I cringed when Mr. Robinson prefaced his question to Senator Portman about the stimulus package;  “I know you voted for the package, but I have the feeling it pained you………………   That was a softball worthy of CNN/MSNBC.   For goodness sakes, they authorized a spending bill of over $2 trillion dollars.   Let him defend and stand up for his vote.

I’m not sure that aiming for hard journalism here is always a great idea.
