The President of The Midwest

This week on the pioneering social distanced produced podcast (we are all at least several hundred miles apart), we of course talk about the virus that went viral. And fair warning: there is some criticism of the President in this show. We also call on our old friend, Purdue University President Mitch Daniels, who in an alternate universe, is probably enjoying his second term as President of the United States. P.S. you should read Andy Ferguson’s terrific profile of him in The Atlantic. We talk to him about the virus (natch), how he’s keeping tuition at Purdue under $10K, and the challenges of running a large community in this day and age. Then, the 4th Ricochet Podcaster (as he’s now known), John Yoo stops by to talk about the legalities of governments taking over hotels and medical facilities to treat coronavirus patients. Finally, more talk about life in the Age of Corona and James gives some tips on buying toilet paper.

Rob keeps harping on about failures. What failures specifically? Was keeping the virus off our shores ever possible? Does it not take time to develop tests and vaccines for a new disease?

Right on!  Rob’s comments on that almost made my head explode.  He just takes it for granted that everything has gone wrong, without a shred of evidence.  It seems that people have no idea how complicated it is to analyze a new virus, develop reliable testing procedures and equipment, get that equipment into mass production, and handle the logistics of getting that equipment to the right places.  People are complaining that the process has been too slow.  Like we were supposed to have had hundreds of thousands of test kits sitting in a Raiders of the Lost Ark warehouse somewhere, for a disease that didn’t even exist.  Which might have been a good idea, if it wasn’t, you know, impossible!  I think the process has been proceeding at lightning speed.  Testing, quarantine procedures, logistics, progress on a vaccine.  It is almost unbelievable that all of this has happened within a couple of months.  Would Rob prefer that we take the South Korean approach of rushing unreliable test kits into widespread use?

As for Trump, I think he has been handling this very well.  Probably better than we deserve, and much better than any Democrat would be doing.  If Obama was President, I’m sure the only thing he would have done was lecture us that we mustn’t blame the Chinese because that would be racist.  Trump is being criticized for over-reacting and under-reacting.  At the same time.  That’s usually a pretty good sign.

Yeah, just a little bit of panic in his voice and remarks.  But we love him anyway!  Think how bad his panic would be without the conservative tendencies he has formed by being center-right.

Problem is, as “influencers,” people like that give the impression that electing Biden or Bernie would produce better results, even if that isn’t their intent.

He screwed up. While I didn’t watch his Oval Office speech, the fact that he got three major items wrong I find disappointing.

And . . . this is a case of him reading a speech, rather than winging it like at rallies. So someone needed to write it down, edit and print it. Maybe Peter Robinson can help here on the process. Ultimately the president is responsible for his words, but where is the support of his staff here?

Peter Robinson admitted what everyone except Rob Long and the rest of the GLoPsters got from the speech – competent, informed reassurance.  There were two or three rather simple misstatements in the delivery – one was omitting the word “not” from the mention of affected cargo shipments from Europe.

I don’t understand why the Chicken Little act from Rob (and the rest of the GLoPsters) that Trump’s speech on Wednesday night was OMIGODTHE*WORST*SPEECHEVERSOMANYCONFUSINGPOINTS*MAJOR*ERRORSPUBLICOPINIONPOLLSTANKINGWE’REALLGOINGTODIE!

If I want a dose of irrational nonsense like that, I’ll see what Jennifer Rubin is serving.

This is not likely to have been Gillum’s first, er, rodeo.  It’s unlikely he would have paid close attention to which boy toy was legal and which, jailbait.

Of course, for a journalist to look too deeply into that would tend to hurt his career.

Given the gravity of the Gillum incident with the ensuing embarrassment and utter humiliation to Gillum and his family, if one were to invoke the Marion Barry political career calculation Andrew Gillum will be elected Mayor of Tallahassee again in 2022.

My guess is he’s through. He ran a terrible campaign against a very green DeSantis. My dad and uncle are pretty involved in Florida Democrat Party politics – my Dad sat this one out though because Gillum burned him a while back. I know my uncle was pretty angry that he helped raise a ton of money for Gillum which was almost certainly pocketed.

The guy has no charisma and he’s torched a lot of bridges with donors. Good riddance!

Is there any evidence that Gillum’s political party or his voters are at all humiliated?  Andrew Gillum, a grotesque fraud, a reprobate, was strongly supported by the Democrat Party, and nearly won the race for Governor of the nation’s third largest state.

As a nominal Republican, I’m humiliated that I voted for John McCain, who eventually proved that he had no principles consistent with anything that the Republican Party stands for.  I’m far from the only Republican to criticize McCain.  But Democrats, no matter how disgusting the behavior, always circle the wagons.

At the moment they seem to have semi non-personed him, in that his claim to be going into rehab was reported without snark or cynicism, but they also didn’t want to dwell on the topic of why he was going into rehab. They just want Gillum to go away for a while, so the public, especially in Florida, will forget all the hype from two years ago and how close he came to being the state’s governor, as well as keeping the public from wondering if and media people on the state or national level knew about Gillum’s problems, but kept quiet during the 2018 election cycle.

By the way, not to get way off topic, but is there something about black male politicians being on the down low? I’m thinking Obama, Cory Booker, Mr. Gillum. I can’t say I’ve noticed any trend like this.  According to the FBI, that crusading black minister had 40 mistresses but no “misters”, for example.

On the other hand, one of the traditional causes is an absent father; and there’s an epidemic of that in the black community.

Remember, the original neocons were liberals and leftists who rejected the Democrats’ increasingly anti-American and pro-Communist slant.

Over time, many of them studied the thought of their new allies, and “came over” on other issues as well, but to varying degrees — and not all of them.

Gillum’s tragic experience (society is to blame) only makes him more suited to represent Florida’s newest voting block, now that a referendum has restored the voting rights of convicted felons.

I particularly love the reference to “overcoming prison” — successfully resisting rehabilitation? — in this NBC headline:

Caught this pod cast a week late.   Its amazing how listening to these late convinces you that these guys are entertainers and have little to no political prognostication ability.  Probably true of all political theater.  Its not there to inform just entertain us.  Trump the class clown has now taken over the issue, looks commanding on TV and the nation is impressed by his efforts.  Whatever this “worst speech ever” they were talking about is forgotten and meaningless, except NeverTrumpers will play it on their VCRs long after Trumps second term.

Things are changing fast.  No one knows how its going to go.  In two more weeks maybe Trump will be the villain in America, but no one knows and their insights have little relevance on the future.

I always thought a pandemic was something that wiped out large swaths of the population, like the Spanish flu or the plague.

Good point. People catch colds all the time, so technically it could be called a pandemic. If anything, the regular flu is a pandemic every year because of the death toll.

Bad times can doom a Presidency – just ask Jimmy Carter. However, my guess is Trump will prevail because more people are aware of the MSM’s manipulation of the coverage. It’s in the open now . . .

No it’s not.  An epidemic is when a disease goes beyond its natural and normal events.  A pandemic is an epidemic that is global.
