The Most Interesting Virus in the World

The main topic? What else? The Coronavirus, which is roiling everything from the markets to the political arena and beyond. The Vice President is the new point man.

Then we get down to the nitty gritty of the race for the Democratic nomination with Luke Thompson and talk to a sensible Democrat about the environment as we’re joined by the President of Environmental Progress, Michael Shellenberger, on why nuclear power is the way to go and his new book, Apocalypse Never.

And speaking of the Coronavirus, James gives us our Ricochet Member Post of the Week, which features a “returning champion.”

Music from this week’s show: Carolina in the Morning by Dean Martin

I thought this was some pretty wild, but plausible election analysis from John Batchelor.

I don’t know anything about John Batchelor except that he was Mona Charen’s favorite radio host. She must be beside herself with Batchelor appearing with Seb Gorka.

Probably shouldn’t be a shock to Mona, considering what the Bulwalk allowed be done to Batchelor in their name at CPAC last year by Molly Jong-Fast.

I wasn’t aware of that. He’s 1000 times more thoughtful than she is, though.

The way they produce his podcast is excellent. They do it by guest.

I cannot stand these people. 99% of the people that are in the organized GOP resistance to Trump are just awful. At best they don’t make any sense, and at  at worst they are terrible people. Almost all of them fell for theRussia stuff until they just couldn’t anymore out of embarrassment. The Mueller point or whatever.

I was watching the twitter coverage of that counter CPAC event , the Principles First thing, yesterday and it just reaffirmed everything I believe. We have some local Minnesota people involved in that, and going forward it’s very hard to take them seriously. They either think simplistically for whatever reason, or they just overdo everything.

The lineup of speakers they had was ridiculous given what they are trying to do. My personal theory is Heath Mayo is just a dupe for all of the speakers and who funds them. He’s not that sharp, and given from what you can tell about how they operate, they have to have a lot of outside money.

If you want to see coverage of it, I recommend Steven Miller for prior to the event, and Will Chamberlain and Julie Kelly during it. Chamberlain has penned a video about it that is really good.

    Unreal.

I will never forget about a year ago she wrote four straight columns that made absolutely no sense.

My new name for The Bulwark is the “Pierre Omidyar Writers Group.” It’s literally funded by a progressive.

One other thing about the Principals First / counter CPAC event.

I will take this back upon further information, because I’m not going on very much.

It sounds like those guys really wish for the old days when the Democrats were dominated by conservatives like Scoop Jackson or whatever. This makes sense because I think a lot of those guys really like centralized power and don’t see the dysfunction. The thing you have to realize is there is no limiting principal on the left. If the GOP got more and more libertarian or conservative it will stop at the Founder’s original system. (Of course they are going to say Trump is taking us towards fascism and nationalism, but I don’t agree with that. What people are calling nationalism is usually more about how you are going to organize and effect your sovereignty.)  On the left there is no such thing. It just gets more and more crazy and it delves off into rabbit holes like identity politics and intersectionality until you get to full communism. You have to get that into your head if you’re going to see reality.

The other thing is it sounds like they think Trump and Barr are trying to hijack the DOJ and they don’t think much of the Durham investigation.

Amanda Carpenter thinks that there’s going to be a big upheaval in conservative media. I highly doubt it. I notice one of their themes is Rush Limbaugh et. al.  interferes with the governance of this country. It really pisses me off when they take thoughtless shots at people like Mark Levin, who is about as educated and thoughtful as you can be, but that’s what they like to do.

Charen hasn’t been on the Batchelor Show since soon after the election. Don’t know whose preference it was or if it was mutual.

I was interested in everything she said until she lost her mind about Trump. She doesn’t want to think hard enough about what is going on.

She has good vision but often gets stuck in the tunnel (IMO). I appreciate her turning me onto the Batchelor Show.

I remember first listening to it post-9/11, when it was the Batchelor and Alexander Show and would show up after the Yankees radio broadcasts on WABC-New York. It was sort of like (and still sort of is) a quirky conservative-leaning show that’s positioned somewhere between eight parts NPR style and two parts Art Bell’s old overnight radio show. It found it’s home in the late evening slot on WABC, because most talk stations don’t really program much for that time slot, thinking most of their potential listeners are watching TV.

John Batchelor has had a professor on talking about regicide once a week for a long time. I highly recommend it. This is sort of dramatic, but I think it’s dead on. We have those principles first people in Minnesota and they think just like this. They don’t care if impeachment makes any sense. They don’t study anything about the history of it or the Federalist papers etc. This includes lawyers. They just want him impeached. Then throw in the Democrats.

Batchelor is also the author of a fine literary SF novel, The Birth of the People’s Republic of Antarctica, 1995, as by John Calvin Batchelor.
