State Fair

This week, we do a Rico-Centric show with our regular crew and our two trusty editors: Jon Gabriel (Ricochet’s beloved EIC) and Bethany Mandel, the Madonna of The Main Feed. We talk about flagpoles, conservatives on social media, an insider’s view of Arizona, why Instagram is the best social media platform (after this one, natch) and of course, Lileks gives the lowdown on the Minnesota State Fair.

Music from this week’s episode: State Fair (opening title) by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II

The Minnesota State Fair is enormous and it runs like a watch. It’s unbelievable.

You guys make me laugh how FB intrudes on you with alerts. You can change the settings. I get zero visual or auditory alerts on FB, or from any other app, including email. We conservatives take control of our lives, apps, and such. Pm me if you need a tutorial on enjoying in FB, and harnessing it for enjoyment, not domination.

I would love to see video of @peterrobinson walking around the fair (sweater tied at the neck optional) and encountering all the loud, noisy, smelly, and fried joys (animal, human, and food) that make a state fair so much fun.

No. The sweater tied around the neck is not optional.

When I was very young my mother was asked why she had so many children. Her response was that she didn’t know what was causing it until after the sixth one.

    Haha. I’m #2 of 9.

People always thought we were Catholic, but we aren’t. When people rudely asked why she had so many kids she had 2 answers.

“I do the thing I am really good at.”

All of us are healthy, sane, and positive contributors to our family and society.

The other answer she used was,

“Children are a heritage from the LORD….Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.”

This is the truth. Currently, mom has a family of 46 to look after her. Of course, she does a lot of looking after for the grands also. Best investment she ever made.

Yes, Peter, we wish we could’ve seen Rob’s face, too, while Bethany was talking about being fertile! A video podcast like Ben Shapiro’s would be awesome.

When my husband and I had our first baby (of 4), his sweet aunt, who was a college professor and a big leftist, sent us a gift with a note saying, “Welcome to our world, Precious Baby. I hope you’ll forgive us when you see what we’ve done to it.”

Hearing that Rob was in Alabama made me think Ricochet needs a Southeastern event! Nashville or Asheville or Greenville would be fun, and Rob could get lots of good southern food. My uncle owns a few BBQ restaurants in Greenville. Best smoked ribs/chicken ever, with an excellent hot vinegar based sauce. And @jonahgoldberg needs to visit my town and eat at Bigfoot’s Little Donuts. Now I can never go there without thinking about Jonah’s obsession with Bigfoot Erotica.
