Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
There are few on planet Earth who’ve spilled as much ink over concerns on Western Civilization’s decline as today’s guest Douglas Murray. Nevertheless, he’s betting long on America even though he’s well aware of the onslaught recounted in his latest bestseller, The War on the West. (Order your copy today!) Murray takes us through the complications of finding things to agree on when the past is upended by our foes; how his new home country became the heart of the problem; and the very fine surgical procedure needed to not only fight the good fight but to win it.
The fellas discuss the January 6th Committee–or rather, the diversion masquerading as an investigation. They’re somewhat intrigued by the public fur flying at the Washington Post, and they describe some of their tippy top pet peeves as far as vocabulary and grammar are concerned.
(Got any linguistic peeves? Let’s hear ’em, Ricochetti!)

Ricochet throve from the first. It has thriven in fact ever since the first post. May it thrive for evermore.
Not sure how this qualifies Murray as “one of the West’s greatest intellectual champions” or for that matter, brave. Pointing out the obvious and making lots of money for yourself in the process doesn’t make you either of those things. Last time I checked he doesn’t get a lot of attention from liberals so what’s the point apart from self-aggrandizement?
Douglas was on Bill Maher’s show two weeks ago.
A quick check shows Maher’s viewership at about half that of Rachel Maddow, and below that of the Joy Reid show, around 1/4 that of Tucker Carlson or The Five on Fox News..
It’s on a pay channel.
Douglas Murray is one of those guys whose work I largely appreciate. One of the reasons I always have to remember which Murray is which (Charles) is that with both of them , the analysis is routinely good, with hit-or-miss conclusions.
If you think this stuff is “obvious”, you must live in some kind of right-wing bubble. (Did you read the books?)
This is the kind of stuff that gets professors pursued by howling mobs and media people fired from their jobs.
I suspect Bill Maher’s viewership is more influential.
He also gets good free media as well from that show like nobody else.
Nobody gets MSNBC or Fox News for free either.
I knew you were going to say that. Can you guess what my answer to this is going to be?
If I had to pay for MSNBC, I would get rid of it, as I rarely watch it.
But it’s part of a package, so I end up getting it anyway — in effect, for free.
All kinds of channels would die if you weren’t forced to buy them. CNN.
The segment is plastered all over YouTube and social media. For free.
You only checked one distribution point. Try again.
Also, the point wasn’t about Maher’s ratings, it was about whether or not Douglas got attention from Liberals. Maher’s show is a major influencer in Democratic and media circles and drives a ton of secondary media hits. They know who Douglas is.
And my larger point is that it doesn’t seem to matter who Maher has on his show, or how much they bash democrats etc, his audience whoops and hollers, then they all – including Maher – go vote for Democrats again.
This seems to cover it pretty well:

I think the fancy term is earned media.I thought everybody understood that he’s exceptional at doing that.
@kedavis The point I’m making is what is measured on cable has to factor in that the customer has to take an extra step and pay more above the other ones he’s referencing.
Your “larger point” has nothing to do with your comment on the number of people watching Maher’s show. You stapled that on to this conversation after numerous people pointed out to you that the ratings aren’t relevant in this discussion.
P.S. In the most recent LA Mayoral Primary race,
RepublicanDINO Rick Caruso (and a recent guest on Maher’s show) received the most amount of votes and is now in a runoff with Democrat Karen Bass. It’s an open primary and lots of Maher watching Democrats voted for Caruso.I don’t know anyone who watches Maher’s show and last time I checked he has people on to gin up his audience, not change their minds.
He gets a ton of earned media. He affects the political system.
He’s almost like a blue dog democrat with an independent mind.
These are just facts.
A couple of us on this thread have commented on who watches his show and why the actual numbers that the show pulls aren’t indicative of its influence.
What a weird digressive turn this conversation has taken. The fact remains that Douglas Murray is brilliant, insightful and witty and therefore well worth our time and attention. He is correctly identifying many (if not most) of the problems plaguing the West.
What’s bizarre is that if you aren’t a fulminating, Mark Levin-type conservative, there are visitors to this website who will dismiss you as “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”
I think that’s true.
I pray that you and I will be alert for a sudden opportunity to influence one of those people and be given the right words, before we die.
