On A Rant

We discuss the events of the week, we talk to AEI’s Yuval Levin about leadership in a populist age and Andy McCarthy about the 25th Amendment and pardons. One of our hosts is dealing with a medical issue which he discusses here and in some members only content with Dr. Jay Bhattacharya (available here).  Keep calm, carry on, and be nice to each other. This too shall pass.

I Gary Robbins (View Comment):What is the song at the end of the Podcast? I found it to be hauntingly beautiful.

The Cash version of Hurt is iconic (produced by Rick Rubin), but most people don’t know it’s actually a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song (warning: some bad language):

So much so that a reviewer once commented about Nine Inch Nails performing a cover of Cash’s Hurt.

It was also the last song that Cash recorded as he was dying.

It was amazing to watch the video.  What touched me was June Carter watching Johnny sing, as they were both approaching the ends of their lives.  Very moving and sobering.

Indeed. We switched to a conservative-owned hosting company last summer.

Trash (Trump), Cut him loose. Bury him 20 feet deep.

Also this hatred of human beings and fellow Americans is generally not something that conservatives usually do.

I can’t ever remember wishing that Obama, Bill Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Nancy Pelosi, or any politician was buried and dead.

I don’t even know what it is exactly that Trump said that was so terrible.  Did he say to storm the Capitol or something?  Then all the Lefty news media accused him of advocating violence or something?  This is only my guess.

If so, how is this different from Gary desiring that the President of the United States be dead and buried.

Although there are still 11 days left, the fact that Trump survived the term should be seen as a real accomplishment.

The last time the Democrats declared a “Resistance” and started continually spouting Virginia’s motto Sic semper tyrannis — “thus always to tyrants”, the first Republican president ended up dead at Ford’s Theatre.

I think I might avoid the non-Delingpole/VDH podcasts for awhile.

VDH’s The Classicist is now officially a Ricochet Audio Network podcast. (It was previously a Hoover Institution podcast.) I have been trying to to convince the Blue Yeti to change the show’s artwork to this:

Except, of course, we need to swap out Leonidas’ face with Victor’s, and Queen Gorgo’s with Troy’s face.

Is the United States or the Republican Party or the conservative movement falling apart?

I was just listening to Michael Malice’s podcast with Arthur Herman which I guess is from June 2020.

They were talking about how St. Augustine had to try to calm everyone down when the Roman Empire collapsed, assure everyone that something better would appear, remind everyone that there has been a lot of evil with the Roman Empire, and that a better world built on love can emerge.

    Peter and Rob,

If you believe what you’ve said on this podcast, and take seriously Yuval Levin’s warnings, I’d ask you to consider how those lessons apply to this website. Increasingly you’re lending your own good names to a conspiricist fever swamp in which language proliferates the logical end point of which would be continued political violence.

Shut down the member feed, lock comments on the main feed and refund subscriptions. I hope you can maintain the audio network and its many wonderful podcasts, but the “conversation and community” part should be written off as a failed experiment.

I’ll always look back with affection on the days when those things could actually be found here but right now and for the foreseeable future the community is broken.

You could not resubscribe if you want.

Oh, boy. I’ve avoiding this one.

As Gary actively and enthusiastically supported Joe Biden and was even against swishy Martha McSally and others as I remember, this comment says a lot.

There have only been a few of the flagship ricochet podcasts that I have skipped or missed, but I think this might be one. I think I might avoid the non-Delingpole/VDH podcasts for awhile. Dan Senor’s post-COVID postcast was kind of interesting though.

If Republicans want to survive, they need to cut him [Trump] loose.

I will. Gary is disgusting. I hope he spends time in contemplation over what he has allowed himself to become. A vindictive, bloodthirsty monster.

No, I do not think that Rob wants the actual body of Donald Trump to be thrown on a literal bonfire.

I take him at his word. And yours.

On a practical level, there is no need to risk making him a martyr in the eyes of many. You can’t win without them. Ignore him and they might let it slide. Follow your and Rob’s nonsense and you may lose them forever. But maybe that’s what you both want.

I voted for him because he was all we had to fight off the Democrats. Then he handed the Democrats everything they ever wanted. I agree with Rob. He needs to be gone and forgotten and the Democrats won’t let him because they need him. So we need to get him cancelled.

On Rob’s rant on Trump, I don’t quite a agree, and am more in Peter’s camp.

Rob’s analysis, that the Democrats will be running against Trump forever might be true, but I’m not sure how effective it will be.  They ran forever against Joe McCarthy, but McCarthy’s shenanigans occurred after World War II during a time of confident peace and prosperity, when the country was more unified.

And Republicans do have a counter narrative regarding Trump that they did not against McCarthy, and it’s the BLM/Antifa riots.  During the McCarthy era, the Democrats weren’t doing anything overt – there were no riots.  Their Communists were mostly hidden, in a way that Antifa is not.

James pointed out that the Democrats will likely overreach, there are signs of it already.   They just couldn’t stop themselves from playing the racist card.

I guess I’m not going to entirely bury Trump for one big reason, and that’s intellectual honesty.  My view is he did more good than harm, while acknowledging the harm.  But he did something important.  He caused the Antifa crowd, and the intellectuals that support them to show their hand in a way the 1950’s American Communists did not.

Remember how Hubert Humphry worked to expel the Communists from the Democrat party.  There is no such equivalent Democrat today.

So no, Trump is no Joe McCarthy and Republicans shouldn’t react the same way they did post-McCarthy as post-Trump.

Trump has disgraced himself, and we should treat him that way.  But we should still acknowledge the good he did.

I don’t think that could happen, and do think that would make things a lot worse. Rob said that James’ idea that things might be better if we stopped talking about Trump was naive. If I amend it to: if we did less talking about Trump, I think it’s as common sensical as it gets.

The GOP is worthless. Trump is the first GOP candidate I’ve voted for since Bush I — voted Constitution Party or just left it blank the rest of the time — and I rectified that mistake in 1992. Trump will be the last GOP candidate I vote for.

I’d guess there were some small gains with young people too – my experience is that there is no going back once one has crossed that line, regardless of whether their antipathy for the GOP grows. There could be some new stars in the future.
